Hello. Last week I got a Vostro 1500. On three occasions the notebook has 'locked up', seized up where you can do nothing except cut the power and re-start.
It does this after playing MAME games (not always though). After re-starting it says 'windows has recovered from a serious error'. The error report says it's a video driver.
would i have to download a driver? the video card is '256 MB NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT'

Make sure it's not overheating. If it isn't, maybe you should be using Linux instead of Windows.

it's not overheating.
should i download one of these from Dell site?

Since you have a NV graphic card, use the "Nvidia-Driver" but I recommend that you use Laptopvideo2go video card drivers.
Take a look at this thread to update your video card drivers.

Also monitor all your temperatures.

Kdawgca thanks for help.
does that driver for the Geforce 8600M include the Geforce 8600M GT too?
but i am interested in the Laptopvideo2go drivers. i'm new to all this. if i went with these LaptopVideo2Go Drivers, would they work with the graphics card i have, and would i still have a control panel for adjusting brightness, resolution etc.? -
Yes the drivers will work for the 8600m GT
LV2go drivers will work for your card as long as the modded .INF supports your card.(LV2go has an excellent Quickstart guide with pictures if you are uncertain on how to install their drivers). Search the forum for recommended drivers for the 8600m GT(you may need to experiment with different drivers for optimal game/system performance). -
thanks again, Kdawgca. useful advice

And what would that do to help? The laptop was designed for Windows, so why would its flaws be fixed?
