I received my new Vostro 1400 yesterday and decided to reinstall windows since it came with a lot of dell stuff.
The problem is the it wont burn CDs or DVDs, it did before reinstalling. I have downloaded the lastest drivers but still doesnt work.

    The model is GSA-T21N DVD+/-RW.

    What am i missing something?

    Thanks!

What program are you using to burn media?

Ok, i just made some tests. Sorry i didnt mention before that i was trying to burn an image in a CD-RW, the problem is that it can burn normal files but no images.

I have tried with ImgBurn and followed a tutorial for image burning but it doesnt work...could it be the CD?

It might be that ImgBurn is having trouble identifying the CD as writable. I'm fairly certain you won't be able to burn an image to a RW without first erasing it.

You might try another program. I've had good luck with CDBurnerXP Pro 3. 4 came out recently but I haven't had a chance to test it. At the very least, it might give you a different message about why it can't burn.

Ok, i tried CDBurnerXP and i get the error message "The drive(s) could not be initialized..."

I google it and saw it was a problem with Vista, i have the Home Basic edition.

Are you running ImgBurn/CDBurnerXP as an administrator?

You also might try turning off UAC while burning to see if that makes a difference.

CD-RW's don't usually go bad. I usually end up killing them by letting them get too scratched up then from dye related failures.

It's possible you might be trying to burn a 700MB ISO to a 650MB CD-RW... but I have to say I'm at a bit of a loss.

Since you can burn files, try extracting the ISO using something like ISOBuster and then just burning it like a normal CD.

Found the freakin problem, the ISO is 695mb and the CD has only 700mb, i went to the Vostro manual and it clearly says "Files equal or larger than 695mb wont burn into a 700mb CD"...doh!

So i got a blank DVD and it burned as it should be.

    Thanks for your help!
