My first post, hi. I intend to get myself a Vostro 1500 laptop, but before that, I'd like to ask a few questions.

    1) On the UK site, at least, the Vostro is under the "Small Business" section (the standard consumer Inspirons seem an utter, utter rip off), but I want to bargain over the phone for it. Now, technically it is not for 'small business use', so, do I phone the Small Business line, or the Home line? I'm just concerned they'll find out I'm just a consumer (although I can spring small business details on them) and lock out that laptop range.

    2) I picked the highest spec 1500 (since it's £40 more than the mid range one - but has the 8600M GT included (a £40 upgraded in itself) and the extra 200Mhz on the processor - although that is probably a superficial difference) as a starting model, and chose the 1400 by 900 TrueLife screen (although I am concerned about using it in some lighting conditions - outside and under flouresant lighting - consider that another question ;) ) plus a 9 cell battery as upgrades. With that my total inclusive of Dell's slightly ridiculous delivery charge (do they deliver it via missile or something, heh?) and VAT I have a total of £646.32. I hope to bargain that down to £600, with hopefully a warranty upgrade and free bluetooth or something in the deal. Do you believe this is possible/reasonable?

My angle is the 3 week order period - I figure £60 inc VAT delivery charge for an 'estimated' 3 week wait isn't all that reasonable, so I'll bargain for an effective cut on that. Also - I want to mention that I know people who have Dell stuff, and I'll say that their stuff all works great (despite that fact I know it doesn't - I've never seen a Desktop with so many problems - not even the old Time ones before) and hence that's the reason I'm buying from Dell - but I've heard about the screen grain problem - from here I'll try to get the 2 or 3 year next day business warranty or that accident protection thing. I'll just act unsure at the end and say I'll think about it (which I will - would they save my quote?) and see if I can get the battery and bluetooth as freebies (they must cost next to nothing anyway - so it's not like I'm asking for processor upgrade).

Thanks for reading and any replies.

I worked for Dell for the technical side, till they shipped 'em to india. I personally like Dells. I will always buy Dell if I buy a notebook at retail value. I tend to buy them used when I see them at the DI, lol. In any case, it doesn't sound like your asking for much, you may have to go beyond the abilities of a regular agent on the phones though. I wouldn't worry about them not selling the Vostro because it's small business. The fact you're buying it should be enough. They dont' need to see your proof of business. It could be a future business, I dont' think they'd care. 3 weeks is a long wait though, in the world we live in today. The video card you'd be getting (9800MT Nvidia) is definitely worth the upgrade. :)
