This is a small question for the vostro 1500 users here, how is the touchpad? Does it let you "tap" it to clic? Are there diagonal scroll option?

I like the touch pad. Yes you can tap it to click, and no there us no diagonal scroll options just horizontal and vertical.

Dell has switched from Synaptics touchpads to Alps touchpads. I have found the Alps touchpad to be inferior. It is not as sensitive as a Synaptics, and the overall "smoothness" of the pad is lacking. It also lacks many of the configuration options that the Synaptics have.

So why did Dell switch to a second-rate touchpad? I'm sure it was to save money. Look at all the threads complaining of the horrible LCD quality. This is yet another example of Dell utilizing cheap components to lower the cost of their notebooks.

The new Inspirons have decent touchpads(overall, touchpads suck ;)), though Modoc has a very good point with the Alps touchpad. At first feel and usage, I could immediately tell a difference, it takes a bit more pressure to move it around, and I couldn't even find the control panel for the Alps client(if they even have one, though in Control Panel, there was a few but limited options).

Odd. I have an icon in my taskbar for the touchpad. Of course, this is my first laptop and the only other touch pad I have used is on our IBM AS/400 terminal screen.
