I guess this may apply to multiple platforms but for mine specifiacally, if i purchase base vostro 1500 down the line would i be able to swap out the 1.6c2d processor for say a 2.0c2d with a 4mb L2?? would there be other things i would have to upgrade to accomodate this? or would it just be plug n' play? i heard something about the bus being differnet or??? same with the GPU if i have the standard GS could i later put in the GT if needed?? thanks

They have the same FSB and are interchangeable. Its not as easy of an upgrade as on a desktop, but you can definately do it and it will definately work.

The video card can theoretically be swapped if you get the 8400, but I don't think anyone has tried it yet. If you get integrated graphics (x3100), you won't be able to swap anything.
