I'm pricing out Vostro 1700s for hundreds less than Inspiron 1720s with identical specs. One concern, though- have people been able to call up and get an upgrade from Vista Home Basic to Home Premium? If so, when did you do it (before or after ordering) and how much was the upgrade? Thanks!

Media center is great - unless you like having to boot your OS just to play CDs/DVDs

Simply because of that- media center. As a casual home user, seems like I'd need it.

its an extra 30 dollars and I would call and order your laptop at the same time. If you call after you order it they will cancel your order and make a new one which would cost you more time.

Media Direct is what lets you play CDs/DVDs without booting Windows.
Media Center lets you record TV, if you have a TV tuner.
Are you using the Dell coupons when pricing the Inspiron?

Yup- priced out both with 7300 CPU, 8600 GT GPU, 2GB RAM, 160GB HD, 1440 x 900 LCD, Intel Wireless N card. Only differences are Vostro has Vista Business and a 6-cell battery, while Inspiron has Vista Home Premium and the configuration came standard with a 9-cell battery:

    Vostro: $1302
    Inspiron (with $300 off $1299 coupon): $1362

Is the Windows Mobility Center a worthwhile reason to get Premium or Business?

Thanks for the advice- sounds like if I price out the Vostro online with Home Basic and call up to place the order for Home Premium, I could get it $1230, which would be nice...
