I'd say XP. Wait til problems in Vista get ironed out.

Like what? I'm not really sure that you quite know what you are talking about. The only compatibility issue that most common people will come about with the different file format for Office 2007. Stick with the older (but more stable) Office 2003 or Office XP, and there will be no such problems.

I'm going with Vista Basic on my Vostro (to be upgraded to Business when I get it, I want to try Aero). I wanted to try it, since I put XP on my iMac. I think Vista shouldn't be much of a performance hit, since its a very competent system. Its only on weaker systems that Vista isn't good for.

If you get Office 2007, you can always save as a Word 97-2003 Compatible format (i.e. save as .doc instead of .docx). That way, you will be compatible with non-Office 2007 computer systems.

I have an extra copy of XP so I use that instead of Vista, since XP is better for my needs atm. Vista is more buggy compared to XP, since XP is an older, more mature code platform. If you can live with the bugs for the time being, get Vista.

Why use office 2007? There isn't any real functionality outside of One Note.

For many non techie, it'll be much harder to relearn everything

schools with XP and office 2003?? I WISH! Only the teachers get those. All we students get is crappy windows 98 machines.

Yeah, I have vista. Aero is kinda cool at first, but I ended up switching to the windows classic theme. Much more happy with that. So much better having all my machines look the same.

I also dual boot into linux. Which i'll be needing as I wipe the hard drive and install XP.

I'm still going to keep the vista premium disk so I can install it maybe once the kinks are worked out

Go for XP pro, it will fly like no tomorrow. But if you insist on Vista then go Vista Business.
