Originally I was worried about ordering Vostro due to some of the problems I've been reading about...but it was a deal too good to pass up at the time. I first received a SEC screen, with some noticeable light leakage, although there was no graininess.

I called in for a replacement laptop and got one of the dreaded AUO screens. There is graininess (especially on white backgrounds) compared to the old SEC screen, but it is brighter and produces better white colors. Backlighting also seems a bit more even and stronger.

My SEC screen actually looks as if it produces a discolored yellowish-white compared next to the AUO. However it produces somewhat better black colors. Both screens still have some significant light leakage on the bottom.

Given the choice, would you keep a grainy screen, or a dimmer, not grainy screen? I'm thinking of trying another replacement.

I guess you could always ask for another replacement; OR if you decide to keep one, then Keep whatever you think looks best for you. After all ,its you who are going to use it.

There are some color correction settings in the driver, they may help a little to improve things with your SEC (nVidia has more controls than the intel driver)

It's a tough decision for me I guess. I have heard of a few people that kept a grainy screen, and in truth I don't notice it as much when my mind is on something else, however I always know it's there. That fact alone means it will probably continually bug me. If I could just get rid of the graininess, I think I would be satisfied, light leakage and all.

The SEC screen actually has somewhat uneven backlighting...but it is not grainy. Pictures and colors are pretty sharp, besides white of course. However the AUO's brightness is hands down better in comparison. I do plan on trying a replacement again, but don't want to return the wrong screen to risk getting something worse.

WHY would you keep it and NOT get a replacement?

I'm on a bit of a time frame, trying to make sure I have a laptop in time for college. Also, I don't have much confidence in getting a better laptop through replacements, although that doesn't mean I won't try.

My screen size is 14-inch and my resolution is WXGA (1200x800).
