Hey everyone,
I just purchased a Vostros 1500, which pretty sure alot of people did due to the sale, and I seem to be having issues with the CPU and GPU core clock. I have a T7500 and a 8600m GT. With cpu-z it shows that my core clock idles at 1.6ghz and only fluctuates to 2.1-2.2ghz only when under load. Is that normal? Also with my vid card in gpu-z main screen it shows that my default clock is 475mhz and what ever the memory was(I forgot)....but under the sensor tab it says the core clock is only 170mhz. Which I thought it was just an error so then I downloaded RivaTuner 2.07 and it really does show that my core clock is default at 170mhz and the memory was also drastically lower than what its suppose to be? Could it be driver issues? I currently have the 169.09 drivers from LV2G. Any suggestions? Thanks
Any input would be helpful, especially the issue regarding my vid card. I also forgot to mention that in RivaTuner, the max I can set my core speed is to 225mhz, which I know is completely wrong.

Not sure if this is true for the GPU but what you describe for the CPU is normal. It is called SpeedStep and is designed to throttle the CPU speed to save battery life. So if you are just surfing the web it drops the speed down but if you are encoding a video it will ramp up to full power.
Have a read of this wikipedia entry for more info http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speedstep -
hey thanks for the help. I actually d/l cpu-z right now on my comp at work and notice it does the same thing too so i guess thats a relief. My desktop at home is still running an athlon 64 3200+ lol, so I'm not sure what all these new features the new processors include. This is probably a stupid question but if I use something like RMclock to adjust my processor to maintain the speed at 2.2ghz, would my overall performance actually better? Now onto the vid car problem =/. Still reading through the forum and not much luck

No, do not force your processor to go full speed all the time. Battery life will stink, it will run really really hot, and components (motherboard) will fail faster. Remember, Intel's engineers are smart people
just leave it alone and you will be fine.

aznboy,
I have the same setup and gpu-z shows 170 core/100 mem under the sensors tab. Like you said, it goes up under load, but nowhere near the advertised 475/400. I'm no expert so I'm not sure what the deal is here -
Just ran a few stress tests and the card only seems to max at 275/200

When I said the speed goes up under load I was actually refering to the cpu. But as for the vid problem I'm still trying to look for an answer. I'm hoping its just a drivers issue so I'm gona try using different drivers. Glad to hear I'm not the only one with this problem lol. I'll let you know when I try. Anyone else have an idea why our vid card core clock is like that??? Thanks

hey imallin,
It seems that the video card is set up like the cpu with the throttle system. If you download Rivatuner or AtiTool, you'll see that the card has default setups based on the performance need. Typically there is 3 setting 2d, low, and high, in which like you said fluctuates up to a max of 475mhz. Of course you can use the OC tools to set it at a constant whatever clock speed you want. I guess this is how all of the newer cpus and gpus consume less energy compared to the older and less fast vid cards. Apparently your stress test wasnt really stressful enough lol. You may either use AtiTools or 3dmark to see that the core clock on ur vid does go up to 475mhz or to whatever you set it at
