Sorry to burst your bubble, but the Vostros seem to be cheaper than the Inspirons, also, all the crap that you had to get on the inspirons, there are options to not install on the Vostros

Hmm. Okay. So they are more road-worthy, business oriented Inspirons. Thats cool I guess.

I'd pay extra for no bloatware to be installed.
It saves me time from formatting and reinstalling all the drivers, although it's not a lot...but it's a hassle nevertheless.

You can opt out of most of the bloatware on the Inspirons now too (choose "No productivity software", "No entertainment software", etc.).

The Vostro additionally lets you opt out of the antivirus trial and the Dell utilities.

I just configured two laptops, an inspiron and vostro, to identical components (had to choose vista basic, 5400 RPM HD, and 1 year complete warranty)

    Inspiron 1520
    Screen size 15.4
    Screen Res: 1680x1050 Glossy
    Processor: 2.0ghz 800fsb 4mb cache
Video: 256mb Nvidia Geforce 8600m GT
    RAM: 2gb DDR2
    HD: 160gb 5400rpm
    OS: Vista Home Basic
    Wireless: Wireless-N
    6-Cell Battery
Other: Bluetooth, 2.0mp Webcam, Audigy HD
    Warranty: 1Yr In Home+Accidental Damage
    Base Price before coupons $1698

    Vostro 1500
    Screen size 15.4
    Screen Res: 1680x1050 Glossy
    Processor: 2.0ghz 800fsb 4mb cache
Video: 256mb Nvidia Geforce 8600m GT
    RAM: 2gb DDR2
    HD: 160gb 5400rpm
    OS: Vista Home Basic
    Wireless: Wireless-N
    6-Cell Battery
Other: Bluetooth, 2.0mp Webcam, Audigy HD
    Warranty: 1Yr total care
    Base Price before coupons $1798

The Vostro with the IDENTICAL configuration is $100 more than the Inspiron 1520.

That's not my idea of cheaper.

it's selling to small businesses that most likely do not need/require that processing capability. That is why the starting price is so low. It's geared to people who will settle for X3100, T5470, 80GB 5400 RPM. And a price tag of $650.

Im not going to argue that there are some configurations that you can make the Vostro more expensive, but even then it comes with no bloatware, a better case, and an extra battery..

they have a 30 day no charge return, just in case you are experiencing some buyers remorse

Hmm. I picked that config because it was closest to what I wanted.

Also, the Inspirons have a 21 day return policy, and you can avoid the 'restocking fee fairly easily, or so I am told.

Sorry to be such a wet blanket. I just dont see the big deal. I guess bloatware doesnt bother me, because I can remove it in a few minutes.

you're paying for business support as well as the better build (albeit arguably minute). And I'm sure as time goes on there will be coupons available for Dell Small Business.

And yes it's very easy to avoid restocking fees.

Glossy helps with a more accurate color reproduction whereas matte finish is more ideal for typical business environment (fluorescent lighting).

    truelife = glossy

The one that does not say truelife is matte.

(They should call it falsedeath or something.)

They are up on the US site now.

On the US site they have Vista Ultimate as an option, as well as the 1 ,2,3year warranty and accidental damage protection options.

Any two identical systems I configure, the vostro comes out more expensive.

The dell kiosk guy told me what I need to say to return it without a restocking fee. And I have a co-worker who returned his without a restocking fee. Im not worried about that.

Hey, the vostro lists the remote as an option. Thats one plus.

Since vostro wont let you choose vista premium, or 7200 rpm drives, here the two configs with home basic, and 5400 rpm drives from the US site

    Vostro 1500
    Screen size 15.4
    Screen Res: 1680x1050 Glossy
    Processor: 2.0ghz 800fsb 4mb cache
Video: 256mb Nvidia Geforce 8600m GT
    RAM: 2gb DDR2
    HD: 160gb 5400rpm
    OS: Vista Home Basic
    Wireless: Wireless-N
    6-Cell Battery
Other: Bluetooth, 2.0mp Webcam, Audigy HD
    Warranty: 2Yr In business+Accidental Damage
    Base Price before coupons $1834

    Inspron 1520
    Screen size 15.4
    Screen Res: 1680x1050 Glossy
    Processor: 2.0ghz 800fsb 4mb cache
Video: 256mb Nvidia Geforce 8600m GT
    RAM: 2gb DDR2
    HD: 160gb 5400rpm
    OS: Vista Home Basic
    Wireless: Wireless-N
    6-Cell Battery
Other: Bluetooth, 2.0mp Webcam, Audigy HD
    Warranty: 2Yr In Home+Accidental Damage
    Base Price before coupons $1785

The Inspiron is $49 cheaper, when I do both on the US site.

The config I got below was $1877 before $500 in coupons, but that was with 7200RPM HD and windows Premium, which explains the $92 difference.

I had two coupons. the $350 one, plus a $150 one for buying it from the kiosk. The $150 one expired today, and the $350 one is supposed to expire on the 12th,but some people are complaining that it is already expired.

I aslo had it shipped to my parents in Montana, where dell doesnt charge tax. That saved me another $154 :D

While I do like the idea of a solid black machine, the images on the Dell site aren't terribly flattering.
