I have been lurking for a few weeks and decided to register because of my question above. I am replacing my D610 with a D830 and need some feedback on screen choices. With my D610 I used 1024 x 768 settings since I don't care for small text. I am leaning towards the WSXGA+ but wonder how well it will look with 1280 X 800 settings. The reason I am going with the WSXGA+ screen is because of the Luminance/ Brightness of 185 versus WXGAs 160. I have previously had a T21, D600, and the D610 so this will be my first wide screen.

Chances are that it's not going to look very good at anything other than native resolution. Instead, just set the fonts to be larger in Windows and in your web-brower. A high-resolution screen shouldn't mean that you absolutely MUST have microscopic text everywhere.

I would say you should go to a local Best Buy or Circuit City store and try to find any kind of model that has the two resolutions you're looking for. Compare, play, and see how you like each. Then decide.

How weird... Dell lists 200 nits for both screens on the product details page for the D830 (under tech specs)... but then on the configuration page if you click "Help me choose" it lists 160 and 185 nits. I wonder which one is correct.

Great advice. Best Buy just opened a store down the street 4 days ago.

I have a Base exchange close by and a Office Depot as well. One way or another I am going to give this a shot.

wsxga+ is lovely.. but also expensive... when i got my latitude i forgot to check screen resolution and i just got a unit with 1280 x 800 resolution... would love to upgrade... its nice tiling all your work across the whole screen visibly.

I play with a E1505 with the 15.4 WXGA screen at work once in awhile that is used by one of my salesmen. I do my playing at home on weekends when I do updates on it. I did not like how DVD movies looked, and it has the ATI X1300 video chip. I just got a new D820 with the Nvidia chip and WSXGA+ 15.4. One of the first things I did was increase the DPI size as my eyes are not as good as they were 20 years ago. I like this screen much better, and the same movie looks a little better. The Ultra is what would drive me nuts. My other PC is a Dell I8000 with 14" SXGA and I had to up the DPI with that also. When I looked at the computers at Best Buy and the Dell kiosk at a local mall, they mostly have glossy screens that show reflections of overhead lights and such. They would drive me nuts looking at those reflections, and it seemed they pushed either the Ultra or only the XGA screens. Nothing in the middle.

Thanks for the feedback. I was still undecided this morning because all I could find locally was WXGA. Then I came back here and did some more searching and found this post. Helped make my decision much easier. I went with the WXGA.

    This is true

To the, OP I am not sure how close you are to the Best Buy in Oklahoma City (Centennial Plaza Store). This is the only BB in your state that has an Asus G1 in stock, which has a 1680x1050 resolution
