I intend to purchase the Latitude D820 and mainly use it for web browsing, spreadsheet and word processing, would a 1680x1050 resoultion be too high for long-term usage (8hours+/day)? i.e. would text and icons be too small?

Taking into consideration I'm used to 17" TFT monitors running at 1280x1024 and used a Inspiron 6000 running at 1280x800 on a 15.4" which I thought was fine.

I would personally do it. The UXGA on my 17 inch screen isnt bad at all. You can always up the DPI on the web and on office programs. Normally the UXGA are better then the standard displays Dell puts out, so Id get it just for that reason. Dont they offer a SXGA? Consider that too.

If you have good eyes it won't be bad at all. Working on a computer 8+ hours a day with 1280x800 resolution would get old fast. 1680x1050 does take some getting used to though. You might want to look at a nice widescreen monitor to hook up via VGA when you are at your desk.

If you're used to 1280x1024 (as I am), I would not suggest a WUXGA, especially on a 15.4". I use WSXGA+ on a 15.4", it is perfect in my opinion. Unless you can see the 15.4" WUXGA in person, I would hesitate to recommend it.

I agree with the WSXGA+, i use it on 1280x800 on my 15.4 screen, have no reason to go back

well I just got a D820 with a WUXGA screen and it rocks. I had a 14" XGA screen before this on an older inspiron 1100, and this is perfect, I do mostly web browsing, chatting, office, music, movies, and light gaming (UT 04 and Unreal 2 play perfectly (30-35FPS average) at max @1920x1200) and its great, I would never do to anthing smaller, now I just hope I dont need to spend a buttload on my next computer to get something equally as high res...

Also you can watch 1080p video on here... and its sweet! Make sure you get Quicktime 7 and go to apples website to watch some HD movie trailers, they are slow to load but toatlly worth it!

WUXGA has a lot of real estate allowing you to see more of the websites and documents without having to scroll. It takes some getting used to. Now that I got a 14.1" WXGA+ it's hard to look at the WUXGA on my daughter's 15.4".

    WSXGA+ is a nice compromise.

get the high resolution. If text is to small, you can allways make it bigger.

But sometimes images can turn out all pixelated and blocky - I would just go for a lower res. and not try to make the font size larger via software.

However, I used to have a 15" (4:3) notebook that had a UXGA resolution, and I found it to be fine - you certainly get a lot more screen real estate from the higher res.

The resolution you are speaking of, 1680x1050, is actually WSXGA+. WUXGA would be 1920x1200. I actually prefer WUXGA, even on a 15.4", but that's because I have so many things going on at once on my desktop!

    Yeah, sorry, I meant is WSXGA+ (1680 x 1050) too high for 15.4inch

    I'll probably order the notebook with WSXGA+ (1680 x 1050)

I have the 1680x1050 and I use my laptop for 12 hours a day, doesn't bother me at all.. I've used 14" laptops with lower res and I just about went out of my mind because I didn't have enough screen space. I would go for the 1680x1050

I love the 1680x1050 resolution on my 6400...I use it for many hours a day and it's not too small at all. Having all the extra screen space is nice.

I love it on my e1505, I was a little worried at first, as my 19" desktop lcds are only 1440by 900, but it works great for me, not as roomy as my 2 19" ws lcd desktop setup, but gives plenty of room to do several things at once without jockeying around windows
