since we consistently get posters asking about screen resolution, i decided to post some screen caps of the 3 widescreen resolutions available.
these are caps of notebookreview's frontpage maximized with the windows taskbar hidden. they are from a dell inspiron 6000 with a wuxga display. the browser is firefox 1.0.6.
remember that my notebook's native res is 1920x1200 (wuxga), therefore, the wsxga screencap (1680x1050) and the wxga (1280x800) screencap are not crisp and sharp. this is NOT A DEFECT OR PROBLEM WITH THOSE RESPECTIVE RESOLUTIONS. if you get either of those resolutions on your notebook, the output will be as crisp and clear as the wuxga (1920x1200) screencap available below. the only reason the wuxga cap is crisp in the pictures below is because that is what my particular notebook's native resolution is.
here they are...
wxga : 1280x800
wsxga : 1680x1050
wuxga : 1920x1200
(again, the only info you should glean from these screencaps is how much real estate you get with each resolution and how large/small the fonts/images are compared to each other; i.e., take a look at the text farthest down on the wxga cap and compare it to where that line of text is on the wuxga cap. DO NOT ASSUME THAT WSXGA AND/OR WXGA RESOLUTIONS ARE FUZZY OR NOT CRISP. THIS IS ONLY BECAUSE THOSE RESOLUTIONS ARE NOT THE NATIVE RESOLUTIONS OF MY NOTEBOOK.)

i can see it clearly now
..can u tell me what those extensions are that u have at the bottom right hand corner of firefox??...i have adblock and forcastfox there...but forecastfox is on the right side of the adblock icon there

kk..thanks drumfu..i'll check them out
-
ooh...
thank you. -
Is that exactly how you see it?.. My 15" CRT on 800 x 600 sees things the same size as the wuxga : 1920x1200. Only it is squeezed into a tiny tiny screen.
-
Hmmm, does give some idea of the resolution differences, still better if seen in person. Thanks though.
-
its definitely better to see the screens in person as you cant get real perspective from here.
PLEASE NOTE< that if you go to a Dell Kiosk to look at the LCD screens on laptops, the wuxga panels are set to 1400x900 and run pretty game demos, they look nice but again, its not the native resolution and you wont be able to see them in native resolution, your best bet if you want to see a wuxga in its native resolution would be to find a sony vgn series notebook at best buy or other computer store, check the display properties to see what resolution the panel is running at, dont assume that it is set to native.
Also check the DPI and see if it is set to normal 96dpi when comparing wxga, wxsga and wuxga.
Its also a good chance to see if you like those glossy panels or not, the reflections can be quite distracting and if you plan on using the lappy outdoors, forget about one with a glossy panel, every try reading your lcd on your cel phone outdoors? You know what im talking about.
also WXGA resolution on a widescreen is not the standard 1280x800, it will be 1400x900. -
on a wxga widescreen, you see the whole webpage with lots of room to spare, that wxga drumfu lists is a standard size or 15.4 widescreen, 17 inch widescreens are 1400x900. -
wxga+ is 1440x900, wxga is 1280x768/800
-
can we see an example of a site that isn't full resolution, but center justified such as www.swordfishingcentral.com
-
imagine the grey filler on the sides extending out to the edges of the screen
-
Right but if that site is 775 width, than the entire site will appear VERY skinny and everything will appear small.....
This is why I'm thinkng the 1280 resolution is better for me... -
yes, the physical pixels are smaller on a high res screen so while it is still 775 pixels wide, those pixels are physically smaller which increases the clarity and sharpness, but descreases the size.

WXGA/WSXGA/WUXGA screencaps for comparison
