I have a question. Do you think it's likely the new Dell XPS M1340 notebook will have?:
    *LED display screen
    *HDMI or DisplayPort
    *Centrino 2 cpu (obviously)

I have a 2nd question. If you have the XPS M1330 and the Intel integrated graphics X3100(?), is there no option with HDMI with that? The LED screen option is available with either graphics chip, right?

I am thinking I might wait to see what Dell offers at the end of the month. I suspect the predicted release is at the end of August for their new Centrino 2 Montevina line?

I am comparing these notebooks with the Sony Vaio Z series and HP dv4t but they're not available in Canada (yet?). I think the dv4t and Dell XPS M1340 will be less expensive than the Sony but we will see. I'd take either notebook and will probably go with the cheapest one. Dell is good for the customizing aspect but hopefully they will have a decent graphics chip in their notebooks this time (if it's not the integrated Intel).

Anyone know of any confirmed release date?

Why? 'Back to school?' In other words, Sept. or the Fall? What makes you think that?

Because they haven't announced any new consumer laptops with Montevina yet. So even if they announce them in the next couple of weeks (there's a rumor of August 24 being the date), you probably won't have one in your hands before mid-September or so, based on the demand.

As for your question about the supposed features on the M1340, I'm pretty sure they'll keep the LED option and it will come with Centrino 2, since the XPS is their premium consumer line. Regarding HDMI or DisplayPort - that's tough to say, although some of the new Latitudes do come with DisplayPort.

it would make more business and financial sense to clean out old stock during back to school and then release after it so that they will get the most profits.

i disagree.. Dell has lost lots of business because students want the new centrino platform and will go elsewhere to get them.

Its all a win win situation for them. Even if the Centrino 2's dont come out, the students who are eager to get the new platform, will probably stick with the M1530 since that was most likely what they were looking at in the first place.

Once the Centrino comes out, the students might sell their laptops and buy the new Centrino 2 laptops, even those who switched to HP may buy a Centrino 2 laptop from Dell too just because...

Dell must have something they are confident in being a winner for them to completely miss out and not leak anything about their XPS successors.

From what we've seen with Studio, I think Dell does have something up their sleeve.

true but then agian, they would have to give a back to school offer to all the people t that buy it as otherwise it won't sell as much.

Yeah, so they get the advantage of selling off their old stock, then lauching a fresh new line at high prices that all early adopters of Dell XPS line would love to go for.

If you really think about it, students/parents of students are more likely to look for a good deal on a notebook, especially with the current economy, so an older model notebook would make more sense to them even if a "better" Centrino 2 model like the M1340 was already available.

I'm a student and could care less if I have the Centrino 2 is in my laptop. That is why I'm getting the M1530 and not looking back. Unless there is a breakthrough feature beside speed increases then I'm not going to wait.

why cant the release sub $1000 studio laptops with centrino 2, bring alienware into the main dell company, and "Delete" the xps line, keeping alienware as the gaming line? (or shut down alienware and keep xps). why the need for two gaming lines?

Who knows. I've never heard anything good about Alienware, I don't like how tacky their hardware looks, and it's overpriced compared to what Dell's always offered. I'm going to be really disapointed if Dell quits selling high end systems in favor of their satellite company, because I'm no more likely to use Alienware than any other non-Dell company.

That's the plan since they are getting rid of XPS and making it a sub brand.

Yeah, you know how flamboyant aluminum can be! :p

I think aluminum can be done well. The Macbooks are rumored to be going all aluminum like the MBPs on the next refresh.

thats true... a better idea would be to drop alienware and continue xps.... yes....

    -----------------
yup i heard that on engadget (or was it gizmodo) when the rumours of the studio laptops were not confirmed yet!

    -----------------

i hope the Studio 15 comes out with a Centrino 2!

drop the dammed alienware line and drop the xps line... make the Studio line the premium gaming line with ati or nvidia high end graphics... inspiron should be low end.

And lastly, make a Studio/XPS tablet which is cheaper than the Latitude Xt, and the Studio/XPS tablet should be comparable to the hp pavillion tx2500z - currently the top tablet on www.tabletpcreview.com!

Anyone think they may be replacing the M1330 with the Inspiron 13?

I'd guess they'd replace it with something called an Inspiron XPS or Studio XPS, as that's apparently the new naming convention. Basically anything with a GPU and an LED backlight in the same form factor would be a replacement for it though.
