I am going to order the e1705, and I have a coupon for 35% off that expires today. I would like to wait a few weeks for merom to come out, but I don't want to lose out on the coupon. Will I have a problem getting another coupon if I wait a few weeks?

I'd say use the coupon, Memrom will be a drop in upgrade once you are ready to go that route.

Merom, yes sounds tempting, but unless you can differentiate between the speeds, go for the coupon as you can get a better deal.

A few users have claimed to have done this over on the NBF forum, FWIW.

The latest processors, Yonah are in a socket(where the CPU lives) and this CPU is able to be taken out and replaced with Merom, which are socket compatible. Only things needed are a BIOS upgrade and installation.

Lol, I forgot about those Dells that got those Meroms. I have an Asus s96j, and since its Merom compatible the only thing needed for that is a BIOS update. Those Dells though dont need it and forgot about those notebooks.

Wait for Merom or buy? What will produce the best deal? Do people think the $750 coupons will be around? Will the new Meroms be priced as the current Yohan chips?

It's impossible to tell what coupons Dell will offer, so please stop asking that.

Guys, if you want a Merom, you'll have to wait one month minimum, two to probably have semi-widespread availability. There's no way around that. Buying a laptop and planning on upgrading the processor within a short period of time is a waste of money and wouldn't be beneficial in the long run, considering that Dell wouldn't cover the processor under warranty. And since the upgradability issue is risky - as in, it might not work - that's taking an unnecessary chance.

If you want a Core Duo, buy now. If you want a Merom, wait a month. I'm sure that the majority of you have been waiting quite some time to upgrade, so another month won't hurt.
