I am thinking of ordering the m1530 because there is currently a 300$ + 200$ coupon. however, do you think i should wait for the new penryn chipset/the newer high res screen's for the m1530?(rumored to come out jan?)

Anyone got an accurate date on the chipset? on the new screen option?

Also, i've heard they will always have those sort of discounts at random intervals so i wouldn't be missing out on a golden opportunity. can anyone confirm this?/does anyone know what usualy discounts there are?

    thanks!

Do what everyone in tech does... Buy the technology you need when you need it...

There will be something better in the 0-6 month time frame always...

I heard it was 10-20% more performance than what is out now. Processors will be out Jan 6th.

I doubt Dell will be selling the Penryns any time soon. I would say mid Feb or end of Feb... that would be my guess. Maybe that's soon enough??

I've kept tabs on new processor (for desktop CPU's anyway) release dates and Dell usually is 2-3 months behind. AND they don't offer every CPU that is released, they only offer the ones they want to offer.

EDIT: Up to 20% increase in games. Up to 40% performance increase over Core 2 Duo (in SOME applications). It doesn't even matter, get what you need when you need it. Pretty much what everyone is saying around these forums.

    Doesn't make sense?

The OP is asking if he should wait until some newer better tech is out or buy now... Dell has not made any official information public saying when, or even if, they will be offering the Peryn chips or anything else. The January time frame you mentioned is when Intel plans to start shipping the chips to their channel partners. Dell could put them in their machines the next day or the next year...

Thus my advice is perfect... Buy what you need when you need it... Waiting for "better" will mean you're always waiting.

At this point in time, if this poll is accurate, 40% of M1530 owners regret not having waited for a higher resolution screen.

However, the majority don't regret. So you need to understand and consider your own needs and wants.

No one has an exact date on when Dell will do these things. The most we've gotten out of Dell is that improvements will happen next year. The guesstimate for the higher screen resolutions is sometime early Q1 '08. There is nothing official. As for the penryn, it is probably unlikely that that will happen as soon. It could happen as soon as 1 month after intel releases it or it could be 6 months who knows.

As for the $500 discount, you may want to jump on it. Discounts on XPS units are pretty rare compared to others and one for this much is even rarer. Dell does do regular discounts but they are usually on Inspirons and their business systems.
