My photo that I selected for my wallpaper is stretched sideways and distorted. Does anyone know how to fix this? Is there a way to just cut off the top and bottom of the picture?

Right click on your desktop -> properties -> Desktop tab

Select "Center" under the position menu.

This is the price you pay when getting a widescreen display, it's difficult to find wallpapers that are native to the resolution you use on a a widescreen.

if you're really willing to experiment, bust out a photo editor and crop a 16:10 ratio box (for reference, 1280 x 800, 1440 x 900, 1680 x 1050, and 1900 x 1200) out of your picture and THEN stretch it.

that'll give you a native ratio pic, but of course, that's just me

although oddly enough, even when i made a native res pic, there was still a small, but noticeable border on the sides, which stretching fixed, but i found odd because it was native.

anyway, just try anything above, it's all much simpler.

An incredibly simple way to fix this problem (so long as your original picture is of high enough resolution) is to open the file in mspaint. Crop the top and bottom off a bit, then save and set as a stretched to fit background. Mess around with it until you get the desired result. There, not so hard now was it?

well...if you want resolutions that fit your screen...just punch your screen resolution into google and add wallpapers on the end.

If you centre a wallpaper that is a lower resolution that your screen, you'll have an ugly border round the edge of the actual image.

And george, not everyone is made of money. Why on earth did you suggest buying a new laptop?

Well, thanks for all the replies.

I like using my own pictures for my desktop, and like to change it once a month. I'm just looking for the simplest way to get the picture to look right. I'm leaning towards cropping the picture for the 1440x900 I'm running. Anyone know any program I can download to do that?
