Hey all.. will the DELL warranty (especially the AT HOME SERVICE) work for me?
I am stationed with the HQ USAREUR in Heidelberg, Germany but would like to buy trough dell.com which is much cheaper than the German dell.de
I guess I will have to send it in to them in the worst case scenario, right?
Anyone in the same situation?
P.S. Couldn't find an email of dell officials, otherwise I would've asked them - try it yourself, it's a mess to get in contact with them, unless you are already a cusotmer

Keep your fingers crossed if you are going to buy a DELL and if it faces some problems.
Instead go for a local dealer selling the notebook. You are in europe so I am not sure whether DELL has a local dealership there. But I think you should be okay with high end Toshiba or SONY VAIO or the best - Lenovo. -
You'll probably want to check with dell on this. I know if you get a 3/4 year warranty (at home of course), they do have certain coverage in other countries. For more information:

Here is some more info: http://support.dell.com/support/top...ADD63084AD6AF913A816E433D83&c=us&l=en&s=gen#4
Hopefully that will help somewhat. My only concern is that Dell might try to say that you are living in Germany, and I don't know how that will play a part. I know if you travel abroad for vacations and things like that, then it is covered, but I'm not sure what your situation would be qualified as.

I am sure that dell can make an exception for our people in uniform stationed aboard. They better. Call them and find out - and good luck!

From personal experience:
I got mine at USA, through epp, 3 yr warranty (didn't pay for the international warranty), and I live in Chile.
Once here, I had issues with the lcd. I called them, and there was no problem at all, they didn't ask anything concerning my place of residence and the warranty, just told how much time left I had.
That's a relief, because I thought I would've no warranty at all -
I'm in Korea right now, but I bought my e1505 in the U.S. Just get the 3 year warranty and then transfer the machine to your current location.
Here's the link: http://www.dell.com/content/topics/...ansfer_intl?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs

Also, don't forget to order any and all the Dell CDs you need. Windows XP reinstallation, PowerDVD, Utilities, Roxio, etc. I found that CDs are nearly impossible to get, especially in English.

The next business day 3 or 4 year will work, but you may get someone that tells you, you need complete care, you do not. Just to give you the heads up.

Hi guys. I'll be asking someone in the US to buy a Dell laptop for me. I'm here in the Philippines right now and unfortunately, my country doesnt' have a service center based on the list from this link. http://www1.ap.dell.com/content/top...ices/en/international_service?c=my&l=en&s=bsd
Just want to ask if I should consider buying another brand. Thanks in advance. -

I'd recommend to email or call DELL.. they can tell you immediately if they have a service center
worst case scenario would be that you'd have to ship it in, OR that they will send some hardcore marines to the phillipines to pick up the notebook for yaAfter all you want that at home service!

I confirmed that they will give international warranty when u have 3yr warranty (by chatting with US Dell)
Does anybody have idea about the custom charges if my friend wants to ship it from US to Germany or any way to avoid customs
Any help will be highly appreciated -
so if i buy an e1505 here (in the US) via epp with 3+ yr waranty at home service and ship it to my sister in france, i'll have to:
1. complete the unit location transfer form ( http://www.dell.com/content/topics/reftopic.aspx/pub/ccare/transfer_intl?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs)
2. ship it (or dell will ship it for me?) and pay the custom fee?
is it correct? the waranty is still good? any else i need to do?
thanks for advice. -
US dell is not going to ship outside US. Warranty is no problem if u take any 3 or 3+yr warranty. You can join this program (suggested by Dell US customer adivisor)
http://www.dell.com/content/topics/global.aspx/services/en/prog_portables?c=us&cs=04&l=en&s=bsd&
But I am not sure of custom duties or some other things (VAT)
Because on eBay people ship internationally without any additional charges except shipping. I dont know how they do that. Actually one of my friend at US asked DHL yesterday and he got this reply
Code:Thank you for contacting DHL. A computer going to Germany does not have any duties do. However a 16% value added tax will be assess to the item. If this is going to be temporary please note the amount of time the laptop will be in Germany. If there is anything else I can help you with let me know. Thank you for using DHL Express. Fred Wilson
If u or anybody else has any idea how to avoid VAT please reply.
But as per warranty I feel it is not a big problem if u take 3+yr. U can confirm it by chatting with US Dell. -
@ thetick: How much did you pay for transfering the warranty to a different country?
I would like to get the latitude 820 here in the US but will move back to Germany in Dec and neither chatting with customer service nor a call to the warranty dept. would tell me how much the transfer is going to cost me.
Also, is the 3 y mail-in economy sufficient enough? I don't need on-site service... -
Actually I called Dell Germany and they say u have to fill a form in the website (probably transferring warranty from US to Germany) and then the warranty works fine there also. But I cant search u the form because of language problem. But it looks quite simple as long as u have Dell in Germany. You can manage there by calling them and explaining ur probelm.

Unfortunately, from what I've been told and personal experience, you have to get the at-home (on-site) service 3 or 4 years to get the international warranty.
Hope this helps. -
Thanks so much guys!
I wasn't sure if "on-site" equals "at-home", but @thetick just verified that.
Filling in the form looks like a piece of cake, I just wasn't sure which one is the right warranty.
Warranty for overseas ppl?
