I seemed to remember there was some Dell policy that if you upgrade your Dell computer with a Dell-branded hard drive the new hard drive would share in the warranty on the computer. I can't seem to find anything on this though, so I was wondering if anyone has ever heard this before and has a reference or if I just dreamed it up?

Most HDDs come with 3-5 year warranties, so I don't know why you would want it sharing your computer's warranty.

If you purchased a HDD from Dell, it will have a Dell P/N on it. Any spare parts purchased from Dell carry the warranty of the system it is installed in. In order for Dell to warrant it, you'll need to supplement the order number of the spare part as the part isn't tied to the system yet.

Read the back of the packing list/receipt that came with the HDD, if it's considered a spare part, then it would be true. More often than not, regular reps don't know what they are talking about (ProSupport reps are much better). -
all hdds in dell pcs are oem. nowadays there no DELL branded hard drives.
so if you want to keep your warranty with hdd upgraded just go to the nearest computer shop or online and buy it. install it and that's it.
if you have any problems with newly installed hdd then use hdd warranty only not dell one.
keep old hdd in case you have hardware problems with dell pc. you can install it back everytime when dell onsite rep comes over to repair your dell (for example, motherboard replacement...)
