    I have just received my new Vostro 1500 15.4 WXGA True Life.

    The screen is very greyish and washed out. I have changed the settings - brightness, contrast and gamma and no success. It is very evident when writing on the white microsoft works word processor. I have a Dell Inspiron 2200 and it is brilliant white.

    I have just checked and the monitr is LPLCC00-which I assume is the LG.

    Does anyone have any advise they can kindly offer me please.

    Is this a computer fault, should dell come and change screens or should I return it to them?

    Thank you

    ETA: I plugged the laptop into the electricity and the white is excellent now. But shouldnt this be the case when the laptop is just using its battery? Whats the point of a laptop otherwise if you have to keep it plugged in. Is this the same for everyone?

    no you can simply go into power settings in control panel and adjust the brightness setting while using the battery.. if you just want a temporary fix hold down fn key and use the up and down arrows to adjust it

    it doesnt have to do with the brightness...its the actual screens. their whites are more ivory than white. mine is like this too and are most other peoples. there is no fix for it.

    You can adjust contrast in the nVidia Control Panel (assuming you have an nVidia card).

    In Vista, go to
    Display Settings->Advanced Settings
    Click the GeForce tab
    Click "Start the NVIDIA Control Panel"
    Click the "Display" category
    Click "Adjust desktop color settings"

    You should be able to adjust the power saving settings so the laptop is at the brightness you want when on battery. I think you can get through them with the icon in the taskbar that tells you how much battery life you have left when you hover your mouse over it. Either right-click or left-click the icon to get the menu (I forget which it is). You can also access the power settings through Control Panel, as Zfactor pointed out.
