    Hi:

At 4lbs even with the small battery, this thing is about 1lb more that I'd like.

Any idea on how to shed weight on this thing?

For example, is there a "weight saver" blank for the optical drive (i.e. let you remove the optical drive and put a cover in that space).

Looking at the bottom picture, it seems there are screws for easy removal of the HDD. So may be when the 64GB SDD becomes affordable, that'd be another way to shed some weight and at the same time improve battery time.

    Any other ideas?

    Paul

The optical drive is not modular, so they probably don't (and won't) make a blank plate for it.

4lbs is pretty damn light. If you need something smaller, you should honestly be getting a UMPC or PDA.

Take out the HDD and add a bag of helium gas?

    It won't work.

Don't carry any batteries, just drag the power cable around.

thats really all I can think of, and seriously, 4lbs is insanely light (imo) I have a 7.9 lbs Acer aspire 9300 and I carry it around fine.

worst case, if you are worried about weight, you can find ways to spread the weight out while you are carrying it instead. Like getting a notebook back-pack, which is extremely comfortable.

If 4lbs. isn't light enough, you may want to look into a true ultraportable like the Sony TZ.

If you want something lighter, look at the X61. The optical drive and hard drive are really the 2 main things that are still adding weight, so you'd probably be better off looking at something without an optical drive.

Solid state drives are significantly lighter than regular hard drives but definitely not worth the money just to cut the weight of one component in half.
