I recently purchased an HDMI cable which I planned to use in order to hook up my computer to my HDTV. I was able to get the display perfectly, ansd when I played a movie through media direct, I was able to get the sound to my TV when I opened up sound options and disabled the computer onboard sound; however, when I wanted to listen to something from a website, I got no sound. When i tried to enable the computer sound, that would also not work. I would only be able to get sound through the computer when I restarted, and still i could not get it on my HDTV. Anyone know how to solve this dilemma? Does HDMI sound work only with DVD's? This is annoying.

What program were you using when you played your movie? Is the sound options from the sidebar tray?

Try opening the sound options via the tray. Go to "Options" and select "Advance Settings." Make sure your "Wave," "PC speakers," and all other sound options are at Max.

I had a similar experience except my video wouldn't player it turned out to be that there was something wrong with the graphics driver, so I re-installed it.

When i want the sound to come from my TV, i just go to control panel-->sound-->HDMI Default. after when i go back to using my laptop for non movies/tv i just change it back to the original default. works everytime.

Ditto .. but seems everyone here is talking about within Vista.

I think the OP is talking about Dell MediaDirect which lets oyu play DVD's without booting up vista. Am I right?

Well I just used mediadirect to play the DVD but i was logged onto vista. I was on a website using firefox and the sound wouldnt work via HDMI. i already went to the sound options and made hdmi my default and then i disable the onboard sound from the computer and it works for movies, but not for websites. Why would it be a graphics driver problem when its a sound issue? I'm just curious. I'll try to visit youtube or something when i hook everything up again and see if that works but i doubt it. i would do it now but i have an essay to write...
