Under my dell quickset, i made it so that when i close my lid the screen will turn off so it won't shut down my computer or hibernate or go on standby. Sometimes when I try to close my lid really fast but it doesn’t get enough energy to fully close it so it kinda pops back up a little, the screen goes off. When I fully open the lid again, the screen is black. Windows and everything is still running in the background but I can’t see anything. I know windows is still running because I can hear my music running in the background, I can even shut it down but I have to do it blindly. So is there a fix for this or is it possible to set it so the screen will turn off at a certain angle like 10 degree? Because I really don’t like it when I have to close the lid all the way since it kinda bottles up the heat.

Why don't you just set the display to turn off after a few minutes and close the screen however much you want. You can't configure it to do anything at certain angles. It only detects it when its closed. By the way, how does it detect when the lid is closed?

There are two buttons that when depressed indicate a closed lid

because i want the monitor to turn off immediately when i don't want it rather than wait x amount of min to turn off, besides, i never know when i accidentally move the mouse beside me and causes the screen to turn on while the lid in closed. I was just wondering has anyone else experienced this and their way to fix it.

I have never seen that. Maybe a faulty switch? I'll check my M1210 when I get home and let you know.

cool thanks, btw do you know where are the switch located at?

I want you to try this test
(As mentioned above) try to close the lid but not all the way, just to the point where the "hooks" that locks the lid in place go into their slots but not locked and open it back up again really fast.

Iv had the same situation happen latley... I close the lid and forget somthing.. and it stays black.. computer is still running... I press my power button that puts my computer into hybernate and wait for it to close down.. turn it back on.. Show the boot screen and widows loading back into windows.. and Black screen. I'm thinkin this has to do more with a windows problem, maybe both hardware and windows... I just end up holding down the power button and doing a hard crash and reboot. This whole black screen only happens once in a while... I make sure that when im closing the lid.. i m closing it... and wait a sec if i need to re open it.

I've had that happen to my E1505 when I close the lid all the way then open it really fast. I've seen it happen on other Inspiron models too. I just hold the power button and reboot it.

ok so its not just me, i guess thats good but why does it happen? I had to press the power button too and i really hate shutting down the computer forcefully. Especially when im doing a task that i want to see finished.

ive got the integrated intel gma 950 and used to have that problem until recently when i updated my video driver and bios from the dell website so maybe you could try that.

btw when your screen is black you could try play around with the fn+f8 hotkey combo

any other suggestions are more than welcomed. Btw, what is the latest driver (not on the dell site) but for my graphics card? 7900 Go?

Try reflashing your BIOS. I can't guarantee that it will work, but it is worth a try. This happened to me awhile back, and reflashing it seemed to fix the problem.

edit- nevermind you already posted in that thread!, but comment left for others benefit as it is a neat tool-
check out this thread which points to a site which explains how to setup a short cut to turn off your lcd. then you can leave it open slightly still.
