I have an inspiron 9400 and I've noticed something strange happening when I'm typing.

At random intervals my cursor will jump to some other area of the text.

    Example

"When wr will jump hereriting this sentence the curso" :)

    Or

In the middle of a long paragraph the computer will select the whole text (or a random part of it), unbidden, and my next press of any key will have deleted the whole selected text.

Now, its not a problem when writing in Word where I have undo, but in messengers and posts on forums it can be a pain in the butt.

    Anyone ever had similar problems?

I would go to dell online support and see if there is a new keyboard driver available for you to install for your model.

My wife had a problem with here notebook where the keyboard would momentarily fail to recognize input. A driver reinstall solved the issue.

However in your case, it's a bit beyond that. Your "keyboard" is actually taking actions without input. That would be more a symptom of some kind of malware, such as virus-like activity. Scan the system, first.

I recall a friend telling me about a similar problem...

He discovered the cause to be his palm occasionally brushing against the touchpad when he typed. I can't really see that being a problem on my own machine, but I guess the placement of your touchpad is a big factor?

    Just a farfetched guess...

Agreed. It's hardly perceptible when you're typing, but that's the #1 cause by far. I don't have a Dell, but many touchpad drivers have a feature called "Palmguard" or something that ignores accidental brushes against the pad.

If it's not the touchpad, then I would do a thorough virus, trojan, and spy/malware scan. I've seen this quite a few times in the past, and all of them were related to virus/malware software running in the background.
