Well I've been up in the air with what model and features but now I think I'm going to settle on the Vostro 1400. I was looking at ThinkPads but I just don't know if I want to spend that kind of money. Off dell.com I'm selecting the 'Smart Value Package' package 1400 which seems to be the best bang for the buck. It already has the WXGA+ 14.1 screen (which I want) and 2 gigs of RAM and 9 cell battery over the regular Vostro 1400 package which is $599 (funny if you pick that model and add those features its goes way over the Smart Value Package model price).

    $649
Standard features of the 'Smart Value Package'
    Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T5470 (1.6GHz, 2MB L2 Cache, 800MHz FSB)
    Genuine Windows Vista® Home Basic
14.1 inch Wide Screen XGA+ LCD Display with TrueLife™
2GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz, 2 DIMM
    120G 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
    8X CD/DVD Burner w/ double-layer DVD+R write capability
Intel® Integrated Graphics Media Accelerator X3100
    Dell Wireless 1390 802.11g Wi-Fi Mini Card
85 WHr 9-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery

I have a question regarding the WiFi options. Is it necessary to upgrade from the standard 1390 to any of the others:
-Dell Wireless 1490 802.11a/g Mini Card Wireless
-Dell Wireless 1505 Wireless-N Mini Card
    -Intel Pro/Wireless 3945 802.11 a/g Mini Card Wireless
    -Intel 4965AGN Wireless-N Mini Card

Any other recommend changes? I don't game and I'm more concerned about battery (why I chose the X3100).

I am using 1390 and I have no problem in connection, however, the other interface may save some power.
