Well, the little dell is going to have a big job this spring. Documentary

I am pegged to create a documentary series about an extinct indigenous culture from my area. I will be doing the pilot using gear I already have. If we go further (which I thinking I will), I will be picking up some new gear to continue shooting and editing in the field. I cannot wait for the snow to melt and waters around the river to drop so we can get to some of the former hunting grounds and living sites of the tribes. I am so stoked to create this story for everyone to see!

I have to go in for a medical procedure on Friday. When I get back out, I am going to start storyboarding, researching and doing intel for the project. I have a basic plan in mind. I live on the river they used to use to get to their winter hunting lands from the ocean where they would spend their summers catching salmon, seals and other animals to eat. I think we can get at least a full season of episodes from the locations. If we start finding artifacts along the river (I already have a knife made from a stone that was picked up by my older brother from the riverbank when he was twelve, confirmed by a local expert) we may be able to move to a couple of seasons doing research and exploration of their old camping sites.

My friend who is my painter and also has first nations ancestry, indirectly gave me the idea for this project. I can't wait to get started now!

I have been working on basics. I have a title in mind. It's simple, effective and I think will get people's attention. I am a control freak, so I want to have full control over production, however, I am not sure if that's possible or not. I am thinking I may get a hire a student grant to hire a videography student for the summer to film for me, using my equipment. Having an extra person on camera duties will free myself up to do more discovering and investigating. I have a minelab metal detector on the way for searching for artifacts. I know that they used to create things out of bone and stones, but later in their advancement they use to take metal objects from the European fishing settlements and make fishing and hunting utensils from them.

So if I scan and find a couple of metal artifacts, I can do a concentrated dig in that area to find more older things like bone pendants and spearheads. My friend was here yesterday and we were talking about everything. He knows of a few of their camping sites along the river, so I am going to start there and create some content to make an hour long pilot episode. After that, keep going!

 

I am not real familiar with the people on this board. Can I ask what part of the country/world you are talking about? Only if it is allowed and you don’t mind saying?

Metal detecting is both tedious and addicting. As you get a feel for your detector you'll find more and more things, mostly trash but not always! If the area you are searching is not high traffic you'll have better luck for sure. I need to get mine back out when the weather clears up...

Upon doing more research, I have come to find out that there has been on going archaeological digs going on in some of the spots I was going to go. This is a major bonus for me as some of the work is done and I can incorporate these people into the Docuseries. I was very happy when I read that there are people searching today for the story, and finding new things that were previous thought not to be in the area like new shelters and structures. One of the main people involved is a good friend of my fathers. As for the metal detection, these places are very low traffic. Like little islands and coves along a river that is not really inhabited.

 

I have been in touch with the archeologists and their team. They are very excited about my little venture. I am going to be having some meetings with them via teams in the new year to discuss some planning.

 

I have been conversing with my friend who is a fuji X-Photographer about what format to shoot in. I was thinking 4k as it is going to more than likely be shopped to a tv network. Upon our discussions, 1080 is more than enough for what I am going to be doing. That makes files much easier to manage. I will still have hours and hours of footage to clip through once I am done shooting this summer and will be very busy putting a final edit together, but I find this project very interesting and their story should be brought up again. In today's climate and whats happening on the east coast with the fisheries, I feel some more light needs cast on the injustices that are happening to indgenous people even today. If you do some reading about what happened with the fisheries in NS, I am disgusted. But on to more positive things, Meetings are going to start this week.
