So I took the plunge and took my laptop apart, to upgrade the thermal cooling on it.. temps weren't bad before, cpu never got over 40, and gpu never got above 70... I laid down some AS5, and now the CPU gets a LITTLE hotter, but not too bad, but the GPU easily hits 90 when gaming. The only time it becomes a problem is when it hits 95 and starts throttling my video card and I have to stop and wait a couple minutes.. I have i8k installed so I can keep my fans on high speed, but they're not doing much justice... What do you recommend?
EDIT: i8k reports GPU temps are 85 during gaming, but there is a 10 degree offset, so the GPU is 10 degrees hotter than it actually reads.

Gpu idles at 66 with fans on high... no bueno

Commander Wolf can i haz broadwell?
If there was previously a pad where you put AS5, it could be that the AS5 isn't thick enough to bridge the gap between the chip and the heatsink... and you're getting a poorer thermal connection and thus higher temps.
-
You know what?? now that you mentioned it, I didn't have that prob with the CPU because I could just bend the arms slightly to accomodate the extra gap, but the gpu is fixed... can I put a slight bend on the pipe to acommodate it or what do you guys do in this case?

I don't really know what's the right solution in this case... I'd personally clean off the chip and heatsink and put the pads back on, but if you've already trashed 'em...
You could try using a copper shim, but you've gotta be reall careful that it's exactly the right height, etc. You can also try to look for a new pad (which is probably better than reusing the old pad).
Bending the heatpipes such that the heatsink make solid contact with the chip is an option, I suppose... but again, it's difficult to make it perfectly flat, etc.
Doing some kind of copper mod is probably the way to go I guess... -
Well I can bend the pipes, one way, and put a slight backwards bend on the other end to make sure it's still a flat connection. I just need to make sure I won't screw up the pipes, because i know some of these contain stuff inside the pipe to aid in the cooling, and I wouldn't wanna pinch it on accident.

Fixed it, it was the recessed copper pad that was the culprit, since like you said, having a little depth to accomodate a pad, so I just took it out and grinded it down flat, and then pulled the pipe off and used a copper shim to flatten it out again... playing games it doesn't get over 73!!!! idles beautifully at 45, and in my lap it ranges about 55 - 86 so yeah... awesome! Thanks for the tip! ( I suppose I should have taken pictures and made a tutorial cause I'm sure I'm not the first one to run into this issue)
Went from stock pads to AS5, now it runs hotter!
