I got the NEC ND-6500A and this stupid bugger won't let me burn faster that 6x! I'm using the latest version of Nero from the website, 6.6 Ultra and Memorex 8x DVD+R's.
Anyone else w/the same drive able to burn at 8x?

I read somewhere that "x" on a CD = 1.5kb/sec
on a DVD "x" = 1,385kb/sec
therefore ( I have the same DVD, but Sony ) the 8x should burn:
11mb/sec . the problem is that the "x" is measured at the outside of the disc, which passes more quicky past the laser than the inside of the disc. Dual layer doesn't buy you much more speed because the laser can't read both layers at the same time - I don't think you ever will get 8x out of it: great for marketing though []

hey thanks. well, the thing is when i use Nero, it doesn't even have 8x in the drop down list of the screen where you are about to click burn. it only has: 2x, 4x, 6x.
do you think mine could be defective? -
I would try some different discs. Memorex's quality is all over the place. Taiyo Yuden are considered amongst the best. You can get them on the internet at places like Rima.com. If you go to Best Buy, they have FujiFilm 8x DVD+R discs. The one that say Made in Japan are TYs. Good Luck.
I know things, things that could get me killed
