So I looked through the majority of the threads here to make the m1530 the best it can be. Here's what I did so far:
-I did a refresh install and used the Vista Tweaks to speed up my m1530 with Les' Guide.
-I upgraded my RAM to 4GB (3.5) just in case I end up going 64.
-I undervolted my m1530 (13x multiplier with 1.0125V) and am currently optimizing the lower settings using Flipfire's guide.
-I updated all my drivers and ran 3DMark06 getting very high marks. 174.31 seems to be the keeper for me.
-I installed all my favorite games (Orange Box, GOW, COD4, Bioshock, Assassin's Creed) and they are working with very high settings.
Other than what I mentioned, I was wondering if there was anything I missed for optimizing the m1530. I want to prolong the life of this notebook for as long as I can, so I won't be doing any kind of overclocking. I feel the gains are very minimal with the costs outweighing it. Any suggestions would be great! Thanks!

U can buy a CoolPad.
-
Sounds like you done the lot mate good luck
-
thats how i felt when i got mine, wanted to do so much to it to make it better. Just get a good antivirus/spyware program and i think youve done it all.
-
Downgrade to xp?
-
What 3Dmark06 score are you getting?
-
Yep, I agree. You did everything just right.
-
Look's good!!
How about just kicking back and enjoying your lappy now??

More OverClockers should read this!
Be sure to run a good defrag program like O&O Defrag, a good anti-virus program such as AVG 7.5 & Spybot - Search & Destroy on a regular basis and with what you've done so far it will run efficiently for a long time. Enjoy your XPS, it is a fantastic notebook. -
4638 which is fine by me.
I'll look that defrag program up, I've only been using the original one. I have McAfee. Should I bother getting AVG and Spybot? I never had any problems with spam or anything like that, and whenever I ran a Virus Scan every week or so, I don't get any. -
Well, I have a friend back East that has been building computers for over 30 years and myself since 1985, so we kinda know what works well. We both find Norton and McAffee clumbersome and running in the background too much. AVG Free works perfect so some FREE things are great. The O&O Defrag is about as good as it gets, the MS defrag only touches the surface.
No one program does everything... it is the combo of them that is most effective. -
Is it possible that O&O Defrag is not freeware?
-
+1 for AVG Free. Been using it for 6 years without a virus or major issue.
-
1. Upgrade to Windows Vista 64bit
2. Instal Tune Up 2008 and set up 1-click maintaining automatically run once a week
3. Norton Anti Virus 360 is the best sercurity suite -
The OP asked about optimizing not how to make his/her new M1530 slower...
-
GOD NO! Id take nothing over norton!
-
QuickSwitch I wonder where is 8800GT on XPS 1530?
-
How about AVG Free 8.0? AVG Free 7.5 keep popping up an adv everyday since there is 8.0 and its annoying
-
Assassins creed on very high on 8600gt? With score of 3DMark06 ~4.7k?
haxxx?
-
Hey ApocNarok, can you tell me where you got your 174.31 drivers? I downloaded 174.74 laptopvideo2go and used them, but always given me rundll32 errors even after 2 vista clean installs
-
haha, oops, Assassin's Creed is actually on medium settings, and it runs all right. Jumped the gun there.
The 174.31 driver I'm using is actually not from laptopvideo2go.com. It actually came pre-installed when I got the LED. I was somewhat surprised. So I ran 3DMark06 and it was over 100 marks higher than the 174.31 from laptopvideo. My first XPS had the very old driver that they still have on the Dell driver's section in the US. I saved a hard copy of the good driver because I don't know if it's available online. You could try checking other dell websites to find it. -
AVG Free 7.5 will expire in a couple of months. 8.0 is great.. it now has spyware protection as well as virus protection and it is still completely free. I ONLY use AVG.

Here is a noob question for you. Where do I find those driver numbers like 174.31 and 174.74?
When I look at dells support page for the drivers for the 8600m I see the number v7.15.11.5663, A00 and in Device manager I see I have the driver version 7.15.11.5669. Where is this 174.XX numbers (and others xxx.xx numbers I have seen talked about) found? -
Replacing McAfee with a light-weight anti-virus suite would be a good idea.
-
That's a very good score, I did some research on 174.31 that you are using, and others' results seem to reflect yours.
-
It is! All the other ones I tested did little improvement, and made games choppy. This one is pretty smooth with some choppiness, but that's because I raised the graphics so high.
-
Don't forget to overclock!!!
-
boot times? You can always work on that. Antivirus/firewall affect that a lot.
-
I already tweaked that. Takes less than 10 seconds to shut down and about ~25 seconds to boot up. I can live with that =)
-
No, O&O Defrag is not freeware... it is a professional grade Defrag program.
-
Hello:
The driver numbers are the last 5. For example, from v7.15.11.5663 -> 156.63 or 7.15.11.5669 -> 156.69.
Hope this helps you.
Kind regards. -
Greatly thanks

Since the search feature on this forum is disabled for new users, can you link to FlipFires's Guide to under clocking / Volting?
**** EDIT *******
Found it .... Thanks -
I'm looking to control my GPU fan controls as well. Is I8KFanGUI compatible with the m1530?
-
Yes.......
