I have read a lot of the threads here new user and couldn't find what I was looking for.

Thinking about getting the 14z and I know the 9400m isn't the best graphics card, but I noticed the memory is 1000mhz+ on the 14z which leads me to believe the 14z probably can handle games quite well since the 9400 uses that memory.

Can it handle Left 4 Dead or World in Conflict on medium well? Any users with experience or could tell me the frames per second they are getting would be awesome.

I really don't want to move up to the 15inch model and get the ATI 4570 which will suck up battery life and is bulkier.

If so then I will have to pick one of these up!

    Thanks

P.S. If users could post what games they are playing on how they are performing on the 14z that would be appreciated as well.

I guess this means you'll be playing most new games on low settings, and maybe older games on medium settings.

According to the above link, L4D should be great. It's a source engine game, and the source engine is somewhat known for being very manageable on lower-end hardware. World in Conflict is a much more intensive game, and since that chart ranks video cards in terms of performance, the 9400m is quite far down the list, lower than other video cards that would get 14fps on low settings, so don't expect too much with that game.

Left 4 Dead uses an extremely beefed up version of the Source engine, though. It's nowhere near as resource-efficient as Half-Life 2 and Counter-Strike: Source. Both of those games can easily be played on an Intel GMA 4500MHD, but Left 4 Dead is a different story; my dedicated ATi 3450 couldn't even run it at 1280x800.

The asus n10j can barely handle left 4 dead with an atom processor and dedicated 9300m 256mb. its the hoards that get it...and my work computer can handle wic becasue the processor is a dual core 3 ghz with an integrated intel card. so i was really wondering how the 14z would perform with the ddr3 memory and the 9400m. the 14z is soooo pretty imo. i was hoping someone would have tried l4d to see if it would run stabily and if so i am going to put my order in.

I run Left 4 Dead, Command & Conquer 3, on my dedicated 3650 very nicely,

Especially I noticed a good performance boost, after I installed Vista SP2, not huge but both my Vista score improved from a 5.0 to a 5.2

    I know huge.

I tried Crysis Warhead and Gears of War but no way. settings too low, It can run the games on Very high setting, and res but at like 5 frames per second

I was impressed it even loaded.

I was fooled by this youtube Video, later I found out its the Desktop version.

Maybe some day I will get adventurous after Windows 7 (which should boost my performance even more)

and try and overclock, the 3650, and Get new ATI drivers on it Since DELL refuses to allow ATI drivers or update with new ones.

its a shame DELL deliberately cripples the 3650 oh well. Not a gaming Machine, only when my 360 is out for repairs.

the new Studio XPS 16 should be a nice gaming machine, Not ultra high res but playable.

nVidia 9400m G is nowhere close to the ATi Mobility 3650.

Woah are you telling me Dell does not allow for ATI driver updates?! That is complete insane madness. . I have a XPS 720 and love the ability of taking the side off and just sliding in new hardware. However, I have always been an NVIDIA fan boy with an 7900gs, 9600gt and 9800gtx. I always look forward to the driver updates, because there is always a huge difference. That is bullocks.

Still am hoping someone with a 14z has tried L4D or WIC and tell me their results.

    Thanks for the information.

Yeah, in order to update ATi drivers, you have to modify them with a tool called Mobility Modder.

I'd volunteer to try L4D on my 14z, but I don't have the game :(

There are Youtube videos of people playing Crysis on Studio 16's

of course the XPS, forum and Alienware forums would laugh at us.

I got a Macbook Pro with the 9400M (not the 9600M GT) for testing purpouses and I ran the WIC demo benchmark on it. At 1024x768, Medium settings, the average fps were 17 (10-31); this was with an Intel Core 2 Duo P8700 (2.53 GHz). I have not played the demo with this laptop, I did with my Studio 1537 and I got the impression that average FPS are higher when playing the demo than in the benchmark, but it's hard to tell.

Both WIC and L4D are quite processor intensive, so get a good processor if you finally go for the Studio 14z.

Plus some games like Crysis Warhead which is 64-bit optimized really shines and do well with a 64-bit OS.

and a 128-bit graphics card, dell reserves the 256-bit GPU for the XPS line, and the 512-bit GPU's for the alienware line.

my next Laptop will be when the next die shrink releases for mobile.

32nm or 28nm i7 Core Nehalem or what ever the codename is for mobile.

Let's not mention alienware. Unless you like the whole alien thing...
Or how the XPS line is plagued... Unless you like burns haha

Back to the topic, I am very relieved to hear that the 14z can run medium just fine.

^^Thanks medium settings on a small screen are more then enought to satisfy me for the price of these things. Two week waitlist...damn. I will let you guys know how Street Fighter 4, WIC and the Total War games work out when it arrives.

    Thx
