    Hi, folks!
I want to get myself 17R SE, but use an SSD as a boot/OS drive.. I was thinking of buying just one with the basic hard drive installed then putting in my SSD, and putting the original hard drive to a second bay to be used as a data drive..
I see online that there are some laptops already configured with 256GB SSD.. Now, I know it is day and night, compared to a hard drive, but I wonder if it is any good like Plextor M5,or Samsuns 840 Pro...
Has anybody got any idea about what SSD brand/series are being used by Dell in their configurations?

DELL use often Different brands where ever you live. Only the Masta 32gb who is by Samsung.

Spinning harddrives and SSD harddrives can be Hitachi, Seagate, Western digital, Intel, etc , etc ........

Yeah, there's a number of manufacturers. Used to be mainly Samsung and maybe a sprinkle of SanDisk, but these days there's a ton of Lite-On as well. I've never seen Intel in a Dell, but I know HP and Lenovo did use them, so YMMV. If I had to take a guess, I'd say you're probably getting Samsung or Lite-On in those pre-configured options.

So, are these Lite-on SSDs any good, speeds, reliability? Or shall I just pluck it out, and sell it on ebay, while putting in an SSD of my choice? :D

i get similar CrystaldiskMark scores with my 7200rpm + msata (intel rapid) function

standard SSD is just a gimmick (big money = small space)

....................if you want real SSD power go for a high end SSD...(Samsung Pro or some SanDisk Ultra Plus...etc....its double read/write speed against standard SSD)

Yeah, I believe you do.. :) 7200rpm drives do offer much better performance over 5400rpm drives even without msata assistance.. However, I am concerned about extra heat they cause, and think that with my programs I really do need an SSD as an OS drive to feel in everyday operation that something has been significantly improved.. :)
Hmmm, you say "double read/write speed against standard SSD"... what is standard and what is non-standard SSD? I know there are slower and faster SSDs, that is why I would prefer to put in one 240/256GB beast made by either Samsung, Plextor, Crucial or OCZ (Vector)...

even the slower msata drives now are around 230 mb/s speeds, no platter drive is going to touch that.

They do have 6GB masata drives out there, but most motherboards only support 3GB ports but that should change with time.

    I have a 256 GB msata drive by OCZ, it benchmarks @ 400 Mb/s

I might be getting a 17R SE but without a mSATA drive.
Would I need to get rid of the DVD drive if I want to install a SATA drive and keep my HDD?

No, there are two HDD bays so just stick it in one of them.
