My friend has a Dell xps and we are unsure what type of screen he has.

    Here is what it reads:

    DISPLAY\SEC3155\5&152C84BA&1&00000118&01&00

    Is that a samsung?

people say AUO screens are the best dell uses, but I have no first hand experiences with that..

SEC here stands for Samsung Electronics Corporation

Seiko-Epson doesn't make LCD panels for laptops.

I had an AUO in my e1505, and it was a decent screen--good saturation and stuff, no dead pixels or stuck pixels. A little "grey", if anything.

This is neither a Samsung website nor a Epson site. So, despite whatever trademarks you are talking about, in the Dell World of displays, the device-id buried in the display comes out as SEC for Samsung. There are hundreds, if not a thousand threads on these forums talking about displays and SEC=Samung LCD when referring to Dell laptops. Dell DOES NOT use Epson displays.

Lancorp is right, Samsung has a division called SEC which is responsible for making LCD displays and other semiconductors.

You can claim whatever you want. There is only a limited number of laptop LCD manufacturers in the world, among the largest are: AUO/Quanta, LG/Phillips, Sharp, and Samsung. Seiko-Epson specializes in small-medium size LCDs for telephones, printers, car panels, etc., but not laptops.

So through Graphic Properties > Information, the serial number for my monitor starts with CMO, which I believe I've read to be Chi Mei Optics (?).

However through the Dell Website > My System (using my service tag), it says I've got an AU OPTRONICS CORP LCD.

Who's right? Are they the same?

Here's my monitor details using powerstrip.

However, in my dell support page, under my system and peripherals. This is what i got.

    DF056 LCD,15.4WXGA,VESA,GWVA, SMSNG - Samsung?

My powerstrip recovers data from the EDID.

Should I follow the hardware id or what Dell tells me?
