I am sure i am not the only person on this forum that is looking to buy a new laptop, and i waited for some reviews to come up about the 1520 before i made any purchase. The thought of receiving a laptop with a grainy screen and irritating audio ports, has put me off slightly and made me think what other options do i have.

So.. the question is, what are people choosing to get instead of the 1520?

    Thanks in advance.

I'm getting a Dell Lattitude D630 instead of the inspiron 1520 I returned.

As soon as I found out about the CPU whine being heard through the Headphone port I tried to cancel my 1520 order. It had already shipped so I refused shipment acceptance on it today.

Sucks for Dell but I'm not paying close to $1300 for a sub par machine.

I bought an Asus g1s instead due to the better 8600M GT in it.

I've ordered a G1S. I wouldn't even consider an HP because of the graphics and the plastic feel.

I really like the look of the ASUS C90S... I might consider that instead of a 1520.

But I can't seem to find it on Asus' site.... anyone know where to research/purchase?

Try xoticpc.com, 1toppc.com, rkcomputer.net, and excaliberpc.com just to name a few. Go over to the Asus forum here; there's plenty of C90S discussion.

Yeah, before I knew about the Inspiron 1520, I was looking at the Compal IFL90(AKA Sager NP2090), the Asus G1S, the Asus C90S, and the MSI MS-163A(AKA GX600), and even the Acer Aspire 5920G. All 15.4'' notebooks with 8600M GT, each with their own special reasons to purchase.

    There are quite a bit.

The ASUS G1s, V1s, C90s and Compal ifl90 are the main runners that are somewhat available(G1s and c90s can readily in stock, the other two are sketchy).

I ordered my G1S from Xotic. Pre-purchase experience has been good, but I haven't received it yet.

The biggest con with the C90S as I understand it is extremely short battery life.

One quick question: can the sound problem be avoided by using a wireless headset?

    Tks...

That's a very good question, and I'm almost positive that it would be avoided if you used a wireless headset/headphones.

I got the Latitude D630 instead of 1520.

Because I know latitude lines are mroe reliable and better built for my own needs. (im not a multimedia fan)

Have you seen the screen on the G1S? When reading the Asus part of this forum they also seem to have problems with "grainy" screens?

I've seen a G1 and a G1S in Best Buy and they both had gorgeous screens. I've seen the posts you are talking about as well and that's why I wanted to be sure I was buying from a reseller that would allow me to return it for a full refund if there was a problem.

That's interesting. So the G1S you saw had a better screen than the Dell you returned? Do you know exactly what screen that G1S had?

The G1S I looked at had probably the nicest screen I've ever seen on a laptop (although I haven't seen an LED backlit screen, just regular LCDs). The whites were crisp and clear, with absolutely none of the graininess on the Dell. The screen was the same resolution as my 1520 and both were glossy, but I don't know the manufacturer of the Asus screen.

Ok I will look forward to hear your opinion about the G1S later on (if you will let us know). Specifically about the heat and noise.

I am very happy with my current laptop (Acer Aspire 5021 undervolted) in that regard and would be disapointed to hear a fan moving again...

the G1S screen is graininess of a different kind. it's not an oils creen according to most, it's just color inaccuracies that can be fixed with a bios upgrade

Just to let you know, i am using my $20 radio shack headset, and there is NO interference, but it is loud and clear with my ear buds i got from dell.
Edit: Even with the ear buds though, when there is music playing it isn't noticeable except when the songs start to fade(still not acceptable IMO). If it wasn't for my radio shack headset i would seriously consider a usb/express card sound card, but enough with my 1520.

I was looking at the C90S, but it has too short of a battery life for my needs. The G1S also looks nice, i have heard of some heat issues, but I'm sure a good cooling pad can take care of that. Those, IMO, are the best 15.4" notebooks, but i love my 1520. Any of the three are great choices, but will come with their own set of problems, some more fixable than others. :(

IDK if i like the numpad on a 15.4" notebook, it seems like the keyboard would be too small.

It looks to me like it is a full size keyboard. Notice that they don't waste any space on the sides of the keyboard like the 1520

Look at my post earlier. Yeah, it looks neat, but since it's not available yet, can't say. I imagine it's no where near as cheap as the Dell though. I wonder if the barebone model will have the overclocking button like the GX600 model.

The Asus f8sv looks nice. 14.1", santa rosa, 8600M-GT. It isn't out yet but looks like a sweet package. If I could have gotten the Vostro 1400 with that GPU it would have been my choice. The vostros have a 30-day return policy - I might just use it. :)

I can surely do that if you like. The heat and the keyboard are my two biggest concerns, especially since those are the best features of the 1520.

I placed the order on Friday and called to check on it today and it was in production. She said they give an estimate of 1-4 days for it to ship out just in case, but I should receive a tracking number tomorrow or at the latest Wednesday. I selected UPS ground (3-6 days) so I'm hoping it will be here Friday or Monday (Monday is pick-up day for the 1520). I imagine if you order it with stock parts and no upgrades it will ship out even faster.

i think more people are leaning toward the 1420 rather than the 1520 or 1720 since they advertised only the 1420

Stella, I don't know if you know this yet, but there will be a new G1s, with a larger HD and a Blu-Ray optical drive, perhaps other upgrades as well. It hasn't been formally announced yet though :p

Yah, but I need the computer now, lol. I work online so I can't really be without one while I wait. I already sold my M1210 counting on enjoying this one  . Luckily it sounds like the only upgrade that would matter to me is the HD and I'm upgrading the G1S HD to 7200 RPM anyways.
