I was just reading the interesting posts "pros/cons of 7200rpm HD?" in the Hardware Components and Aftermarket Upgrades section of the forums. There was a post by DX3 in which he posted some charts from Tomshardware which should different benchmarks for various brands and speeds of hard drives.

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=3060666&postcount=154

I was wondering what brand/type of hard drive all of you have in your Dell? Does anyone know what they are currently shipping or is it pretty much random?

    Thanks!

In my XPS M1530 (ordered June 7th, received June 17th):

Western Digital 250GB (5400RPM)...not sure of the exact model number, I'll have to check next time I'm on my laptop.

I think Dell just gives you whatever they have laying around.

Fujitsu in both of them I believe. My 1520 came with a Toshiba but that failed ... typical of Toshiba products IMO

Western Digital 250GB 5400rpm WD2500BEVS. Weird thing though, I have the exact same hard drive inside an external hard drive but it is totally quiet but the one inside my laptop is loud to me. The last 5 numbers between the drives are different, the loud one says 75UST0. What does yours say?

I got some Hitachi in mine. Personally, I think it's iffy because it seems to be louder than the one in my Inspiron 9100. Steve, is yours a 5400 or 7200? Mines 7200 so maybe thats why it is louder.

    Toshiba 320GB 5400RPM HDD.

I'm really tempted to purchase a Western Digital Scorpio Black HDD, as I hear they perform well.

As I stated in the original post, there was a discussion on the benefits of 5400 vs 7200 rpm drives in another section of the forums. See my original post. I was wondering what type of hard drives Dell uses in their laptops to compare the performance of (for example) a 250gb 5400 rpm drive to say a 160gb 7200 rpm drive. If Dell was consistent in the type of hard drives it uses, it might be possible to pick a 5400 rpm drive that would outperform a 7200 rpm drive and be larger and use less battery power too, all at the same or less cost. (Of course, it all depends on what is more important to you: faster boot times, faster access, faster read times, write times, or whatever.)

Just checked my daughter's Dell 1420 (purchased about a year ago). It's got a Toshiba 160gb 5400 RPM drive MK1637.

So far it looks as though the 250gb drives are Western Digitals. The others are not consistently the same.

Actually, this is a nice thread. I have sometimes wondered what the other 1530 owners have for a HD, and check other models for a comparison ;) :)

    Thanks!

Dell 1420 120Gb Samsung. Pre-swapped computer had a 120Gb Western Dig. Generally prefer WD (believer in their quality), however the Samsung HDD is slightly faster (and noiser). SLIGHTLY. Last Sammy I had is still alive after over 7 years. So I am pleased.

Sounds like Dell generally sticks to the big names for HDDs. That is good practice, though anyone could tell you that there are definitely differences between brands, regarding acoustics, heat, and speed. This 5400 rpm drive is faster than my desktops 7200 rpm (3 year older IDE WD 120Gb). Likewise, a lot of 7200 rpm drives meet or beat the old 10k rpm Raptor drives. HDD tech doesn't change as fast as other technologies, but this does not mean that you are ALWAYS getting the best performance by chasing specs like spindle speed.

I must be the first one to post with a Samsung 320 GB @ 5400 rpm. Really happy with it so far, although I wish I would've gotten the WD scorpio

Yeh - mines 5400RPM. Would explain why its a bit louder.

Theres no rhyme or reason to what manufacturer or size - Dell just takes the best deal on offer at the time they purchase.

Originally came with a 250gig 7200rpm Seagate drive I believe.

I have replaced it with a 2.5" OCZ SerialATA II 128gb SSD drive.
