I use the sleep function assigned to the power button so when I'm taking the laptop from here to there, i can just resume where I left off.

I used to use hibernate but this was beginning to take longer than a full shut down and boot.

Anyway, sleep seems to work fine, but I've sometimes found it on in my bag, or upon getting to a location, its battery is dead.

Last night I put it into sleep and when I woke up this morning the damn thing was on. Do scheduled tasks bring a computer out of sleep.. i.e virus scans?

It has happened to me too. Before and after reformatting and installing a fresh vista. I don't have any antivirus...

Same, it's happened to me too. I don't know why it would happen.

its very worrying especially if it turns on while in my bag, it must get hot and the last thing i need is my screen being damaged with heat from the palmrest being so close. I think I'll go back to hibernate until its sorted

I would recommend going into the device manager, and looking at the wireless adapters, bt adapters, etc. and unticking the "allow this device to wake this computer".

I only use the sleep mode at home. One time with another notebook I had put it in sleep mode before putting it in my backpack to go home and when I got home the notebook was still in sleep mode but EXTREMELY hot!!!
So I never did that again with any notebook.

While I don't have my 1530 yet (delayed! ), my desktop was having the same problem until I went into the bios and disabled the wake on network. With a laptop in a bag, it might be something like the mouse activating it while closed. Check the BIOS to see if you can turn off any unnecessary wake functions. This can probably also be changed at the OS level, but not sure.

    Windows Update at 3am?

my dell desktop wakes in hibernation/sleep during windows update, recording of a TV show(so it acts as a huge-size DVR)....
