    Will the 128MB GeForce 8400 GS (in Vostro 1500) play these games:

    * Company of Heroes
    * Hitman: Blood Money
    * Splinter Cell: Double Agent
    * Civilization IV
    * Caesar IV
    * Battlefield 2142
    * Rome: Total War

    I usually play games on medium settings, with all (or most of the) eye-candy turned off. I can't really afford an extra $169 for the 8600GT :(

    From what I understand, the 8400 is able to play most games at medium settings. You'll probably be fine.

    i would save for the 8600GT if possible, the 8400 is not much of a gaming card.

    The x700 is in a higher category than the 8400GS. I fear how "smooth" these games will play

    I've been playing CoH with my 1420 using a 8400m gs and it runs average at 36fps when I've maxed all settings except shader (set it to low) and antialiasing (set it to 2x). I find it perfectly playable at native resolution on my machine (1440x900).

    I've also tried battlefield 2 demo (not sure how much more demanding bf2142 is) but I was also able to max all settings (except antialiasing) and highest resolution it offered and get around 32 fps.

    funny thing is.. I can't play aoe3 on max settings :S makes me sad

    AOE graphics demands have gone up significantly.

    I swear there is something about the AOE engines that will make the fastest computers slow to a crawl, generally about 20 min in when all the new characters and AI are generated. I have a 6800 Go vanilla with a 1.73 P-M, 2 Gig, and I have to turn the resolution and some of the eye candy down on it to keep it smooth. I remember the original time killer-AOE 1 on my P-233MMX. I thought that having double the power of the reccomended settings would allow me to run the game on everything high-think again ;-).

    Anywho, thanks for the post, eventually when my 1330 gets here-or I get back to it, I am hoping I can play some CS: Source, DOD, and BF 2 on the road. It looks like my Inspiron 9300 may still be faster than it at gaming. Will have to bench it in about a month.
