I am currently looking at purchasing either the 6400 or 9400 dell inspiron. I mainly want to use it for internet, music, photos & video, movies, some work from home. I won't be carrying the laptop around, it will mainly stay at home. Don't do gaming but this could be something I may be interested in. Are these specs good for the price - I want my laptop to be future proof for next 4 years?

    9400 spec - £1057.57
    T7200 core 2 duo (2.0GHz, 4MB L2 cache, 667MHz FSB)
    2048MB 533MHz ram
160GB (5,400 rpm) Sata hard drive
    256MB Geforce 7900 graphics card
    8X DVD/RW drive
    Intel pro wireless 3945 802.11
    17" ultrasharp WUXGA (1920 x 1200) with truelife
    Vista Ultimate
    MS works
    6 cell battery

    6400 spec - £869.57
    T7200 core 2 duo (2.0GHz, 4MB L2 cache, 667MHz FSB)
    2048MB 533MHz ram
160GB (5,400 rpm) Sata hard drive
256MB ATI Radeon X1400 graphics card
    8X DVD/RW drive
    Intel pro wireless 3945 802.11
    15.4" ultrasharp WXGA+ (1440x900) with truelife
    Vista Ultimate
    MS works
    6 cell battery

I am undecided about which model to go for - basically they are the same except for the 9400's 17" screen & Geforce 7900 graphics. Do you think it is worth paying an extra £188 for this?

    Many thanks for any help.

The Video cards in question are discussed on the forum above. Point blank, if you are going to be gaming alot go with nvidia, if youre not and you wanna save money then go with the ATI hypermemory. You just have to decide if it is worth the extra 200lbs. Personally if I had the money I would go for it, better to have and not need, then need and not have.

You need to decide if you can live with the 17" notebook. The 9400 is the most likely candidate to last that full 4 years, particularly since it has a much more powerful graphics card. If gaming isn't really your concern, and you wish to only do a little, I would say go for the 6400, because of its cheaper price, and since the specifications are practically the same as the 9400.

If futureproofness is one of your major concerns then you might want to wait for the Santa Rosa platform.
