What does a middle trackpoint do in general?

I read about 3+2 trackpads but the precision m4800 I am using has a 3+3

I've pressed the buttons a few times and haven't seen anything

It's a middle click - like clicking w/ the scroll wheel on a mouse.

I use mine allllll the time - from opening links in a new browser tab, to closing tabs, to rotating models in CAD programs when I'm too lazy to grab the wireless mouse.

The one on the trackpad is as alexhawker put it, the equivalent of mouse wheel click, it is very useful to open/close tabs when I browse the web, seriously, it starts to be annoying not to ave one. The one for the trackpoint allows you to scroll using the trackpoint on the default config at least.
