I have a new Studio 1537, Core 2 Duo T6400 (2mb cache), 250 GB HD, 3 GB ram, Vista Home premium and a Radeon HD 3450 with 256 MB dedicated graphics.

What sort of games will play on this.

I have a desktop PC that play a few games on, Splinter cell and Tour of duty. These games are quite old so only list XP as the operating system. Will they play on Vista and is the Radeon HD 3450 good enough.

What other shoot em up type games will play on this system.

Check out this review. I typed 'mobility radeon hd 3450 games' into Google. Surprisingly it's a pretty recent testing, so even a game as modern as F.E.A.R. 2 is covered.

EDIT: just noticed that the test were run on a Studio 15. lulz

Thanks guys. The link to the games testing was useful.

    Anyone know if the following will work;
Call of duty (plus united offensive)
    Cal of duty 2
    Splinter Cell Pandora Tomorrow
    Splinter Cell Chaos Theory
All ofthese games don't list Vista as an operating system. Will they load onto Vista or can I expect problems

Call of Duty and United Offensive both work just fine for me, although if you want to take advantage of your native resolution you'll have to edit some .cfg files after you install the game. Nothing too difficult, though. It looks great and has excellent framerates.

Call of Duty 2 has inexplicably terrible performance for me. It's odd, considering how old that game is. At 1280x800 and all normal settings, no AA or AF, it was a freaking slideshow. I have no idea why that is.

Even Call of Duty 4 gives me better performance. Still pretty bad, but at least playable on low settings @ 800x600. Also, CoD: World at War is completely unplayable even at 640x480 with minimum settings.

Valve games on the Source Engine seem to run pretty well. I have Half-Life 2 and Counter-Strike: Source maxed out, and Team Fortress 2 and Left 4 Dead are pretty close as well.

Battlefield 2 and 2142 both run very well at their maximum resolutions and settings. Unfortunately, DICE refused to give these games widescreen support, so you're stuck with 4:3 resolutions, but they play pretty smooth nonetheless. Also, I just got into the Battlefield Heroes beta, which runs perfectly for me at 1280x800 with all the settings maxed out.

Also, Unreal Tournament 2004 gets fantastic frame rates at all maximum settings at full resolution. I just bought UT3 as well, and I can keep most settings on medium if I turn the resolution down to 800x600, which isn't too bad.

That about sums up all the shooter games I've played on this thing. I've also played a few RTS. The original Dawn of War is pretty playable, slightly laggy when you get huge amounts of units, but nothing too bad. Rome: Total War runs pretty smoothly.

Guild Wars, pretty much the only RPG I've ever played seriously, looks and runs beautifully on this thing as well.

    Hope ya find this helpful!

I only play Source games (TF2, HL2, Portal, etc.) They all run fine with Med-High settings at 1280x800.

I guessing the HD3450 can handle most modern games at or slightly below 1280x800 with medium settings.

    Just don't try Crysis...

Mushroom: I heard that Call of Duty 2 used a different engine than Call of Duty 1 and UO. I played a bit of CoD2 and found it to be terribly slow/slide show-like. I think the engine wasn't optimized until CoD4 rolled around.

I love Source...it will run on tin cans. :p
That seems to be the case. I pity those who have the 1920x1200 WUXGA display...poor saps won't be able to play anything at native resolution.
Correct. Call of Duty and UO both used a modified Quake 3 engine (id Tech 3, I believe is the official name). Heck...pretty much every game in those couple of years was based on id Tech 3. :p

Call of Duty 2 was the first in the series to have Infinity Ward's own proprietary engine. While it's much prettier, it's not nearly as optimized as for less powerful hardware, as you can tell if you try to play CoD2 on a Mobility Radeon 3450.

True, but when you're playing a game, 1280x800 is technically already in High Def. The extra sharpness of running it at WUXGA native isn't that important to me. The WUXGA screen is amazing if you use it for multitasking in Windows though... soooo much desktop space...

Yeah, anything past 1280x720 is considered high-def, but if you've ever actually gamed smoothly at resolutions like that, you can see the difference.

You can play nearly all new games but you will need t decrease your graphical settings.

DOOM 3, maximum quality and resolution 800 * 640 is played very well in my studio 1535, is a super video game. I recommend. I'm currently playing on my laptop :)

You might want to look into a cooling pad like the Zalman NC-1000. It'll take a few degrees off all around and should help prevent thermal throttling of your CPU and/or GPU. Also, if you're technically inclined, you can try replacing your CPU and GPU thermal pads with some good paste like Arctic Silver 5.

    Yay, reviving old threads...

Mastershroom is right. Undervolting helps a ton. I've done it for my T6400 and the CPU max load temp went down 20 degrees C.

@Mastershroom, when you took off the thermal pads and put AS5 on it, did you use any copper sheets for contact between the CPU/GPU and heatsink or did you just take off the pad, clean the heatsink, and apply AS5?

I'm thinking about getting rid of those thermal pads for my Studio 1537 as the GPU still goes up to 70-80.

I left the CPU alone because there's already direct contact between it and the heatsink, so I just cleaned them both and put the paste directly on the CPU. For the GPU, there's a one millimeter gap or thereabouts between the surfaces, which is filled up by the thermal pad. I bought a 14x14x1mm copper shim from K-TRON in his Marketplace thread and situated that between the GPU die and headsink, and put AS5 on both sides.
