Just my luck. As soon as I'm ready to order a Studio 1557 they took away the 900p screen option. I really don't want 720p or 1080p. Anybody have any intel? Thanks in advance.

probably just a temporary shortage, so maybe check back in a few days to see if the 900p option is available again. It's the screen I have on my 1557 and I couldn't be happier with it.

I bet the 900p isn't the most popular option either... it might have been dropped?

It was never even offered in some parts of the world.

Interesting. I think that resolution is perfect for a 15 incher. These type of things are usually temporary so I can be patient, but then again I've been waiting a while as it is, so I just might go ahead and pull the trigger on a 720p. Any pros/cons someone could offer on the 720p? Do you wish you had gone with a higher resolution? I don't really do any gaming, but I would like a nice crisp screen for basic photo editing and maybe more advanced stuff later on.

I enjoy my 720p, but I mostly game. If you do photo editing, though, you may benefit from the increased resolution of 1080p.

I bet it may still be available. Sometimes when you go to Dells site from different landing pages, only certain options are available. Your best bet though would probably be to call and place your order. That way, you can keep the pricing on the build you've been watching and possibly get the screen you want.
I know calling can be a hassle but it helps with getting things you don't see on the site sometimes.

I was ready to pull the trigger on a fully-loaded i7 Studio 15, but soon realized the 1600 x 900 wasn't an option.

    I went with the 14z instead ;)

Yeah, I spoke with a Dell Chat rep, and all she could tell me was that it wasn't an option. I think the chat reps look at the same website we do, therefore stating the obvious....lol

I considered the 14z, but the lack of an optical drive and a lower-spec gfx card changed my mind.

I use an optical drive once a month AT MOST. lol

And the 9400 is quite capable for light gaming (not like the ATI in the Studio 15 is much better anyway).

I also like the fact that the larger cell battery sits flush with the 14z and doesn't stick out like on the 15.

3200 3Dmarks versus 6900. No... not MUCH better.
    </sarcasm>

(I know I know... 3DMarks and any other synthetic benchmarks aren't a genuine indicator of real world performance, blah blah blah... but you get my point.)

whats the deal with the 900p screens?
do they have better contrast or brightness?

cause otherwise, i dont see why to get so worked up about it. I don't see how resolution alone could play a huge role in small laptop monitors anyway.

Well, it's perfect for a 15 inch laptop. 720p doesn't offer much screen real estate and 1080p is just kind of ridiculous with everything being so small. I mean it looks great, but a browsing window for example has so much wasted space, unless there's a way to to tell your browser to take full advantage of the screen. Not sure if changing dpi settings fixes this or not....

Going from 1280x800 on my old lappy to 1600x900 was like night and day. Digital photos look so much better, and putting a .PDF on one half of the screen while working on a .DOC on the other half is just sweet.
I think the base model screen (the 720p one) is a lower grade screen. The 900 and 1080 screens have better viewing angles etc.

Most websites do a good job scaling things to the width of the screen without leaving too much blank space. You can always make things bigger with Ctrl + =.
