Anyone have any insight into what actually happens if you return a Dell laptop to the factory?

Will Dell resell it as a brand new item to the next customer who purchases that model?

What if you sent it back because it was defective? Will they strip the working parts and use it in their next new laptop build, or will it go into their spare parts collection?

If the machine is working, it will be sent to the Dell outlet. If it is broken, it will be repaired and sent to the outlet. Depending on the condition, it will be labeled as "Certified Refurbished", "Scratch and Dent", "Previously Ordered New", etc. You can then buy these "second-hands" laptops at a significantly discounted price at the outlet.

Most likely they get sent to the Dell Outlet if they are still brand new. About defective ones, more likely they'll strip the working parts as spare parts for repairs, but will definitely trash them if they're not up to a certain standard I suppose. If the laptop is fixable without replacing with a brand new laptop, they'll just change the defective parts.

Legally, if it was sold to and in the possession of someone, it cannot be sold as new.

They label them as "Previously ordered new" and on the bottom of the laptop is a sticker that says "REFURBISHED". I'll post a picture of it when I get home (I have a Studio 15 that I bought via the Dell Outlet).

I don't know where I'd shop without Dell Outlet...I've bought at least 20 systems from them in the last two years (mostly laptops, but a few desktops- for work, gifts and myself)...I'd die if I had to think about paying retail again!

I bought a new car (it's an 07, new-to-me, close enough...) a few weeks ago and the entire time I was shopping I kept wishing there was an Outlet for all of the dealerships. Then I realized that all of the dealerships WERE the OUTLETS! =) I love my discounts!

It can be sold as new if the seal hasnt been broken. As soon as the seal or packaging is opened, it is classed as second hand goods.

the sticker thing must just be for USA ? I got mine from Dell and it seemed almost perfect apart from the palmrest up slightly when i took it from the box! I pressed it down and the 2 mm gap disappeared with a pop :) but no sticker on the bottom, so could be that it was brand new. The palmrest i am thinking could just have been when they repplaced the german keyboard etc from the original specification and were a bit quick in putting it back together...
