I might need to put a new hard drive in my daughter's 3 year old E1505. Would it be an SATA drive?

    It uses SATA :)

And probably doesnt use an adapter. Dells usually dont. But not that that matters anyway, you can use your old one if it does (on your new one) :p

    Yep, SATA.
    SATA 150.
    No adapter.

Does that mean I should not buy a SATA 3.0 drive?

It doesn't matter. A SATA 3.0 drive will work fine, it will just never reach SATA 3.0 speeds.
It's not like SATA 150 drives are cheaper for the most part anyway.
