I've been searching around for a few months for a new laptop for personal use... Yet so far, there is nothing that has really caught my eye, or at least the machines that have are too expensive. All I need it for is the normal personal use: light word-processing, surfing the net, light gaming, etc... But I'd also like to take it traveling, so partability is important to me.

The first two laptops I considered were the Dell 600m and 700m. But I couldn't configure those to how I liked them... However, I came accross the 'new' D610, and this would be my ideal setup:

    Pentium M 750 (1.86mhz)
    14.1 SXGA+, w/Radeon X300
    Windows XP Pro
    512 DDR2 400MHz SDRAM
    40GB HD 5400RPM
    24x CDRW/DVD Combo Drive
    Dell Wireless 1350 802.11b/g
    6 cell primary battery

The only gripe I would have would be the fact that it doesn't have firewire, but otherwise, this is the setup I would like to go with. Otherwise, I love how the laptop looks, very simple but sleek, with no flashy colors or anything.

My question is, would you guys be able to recommend anything else? This configuration costs a little over $1400 (taking into consideration a $300 instant rebate).

    Thanks
    greg

A few people in my office use D600 and really like them. About three months ago we got 12 new laptops 6 D600 and 6 D800. The girls got the D600 because they are lighter and easier for them to handle. They seem pretty fast also configured with 2.0 gig processor and 1gig of ram. The new D610 which replaces it should be even nicer and about 10% faster. HP makes a business class laptop that seems close to the d610, I think it is a nc6230 but not positive. Cnet did a review.

    Inspiron 6000d
    PM 760(2.0GHz)
    15.4" WSXGA+
1 GB RAM (pc2-4200 533mhz from crucial, it works)
    64MB ATI X300
    60GB 7,200 RPM
    CDRW/DVD
    Bluetooth
    2200
    XP pro
