It is totally a personal preference, but I have noticed people have all kinds of opinions on both series' looks.
XPS M2010
XPS M1710
XPS M1210
vs.
E1705
E1505
E1405
(I am leaving out the B series notebooks, since no one seems to really care about them...)

XPS M1710 I feel is the best looking. However due to the price tag, I am eagerly awaiting my E1705 which should be here this Thursday
-
None lol. Dell is so budget, their pc's heat up so easily and their quality is so crap. They don't look all that good either except the XPS series which look OK
-
Dell's quality isnt crap. Ive owned 2 of their systems in the past 5 years and both are doing great. I personally thing the XPS look the best. The E series look alright, and the M1710 just looks ugly imo. The M2010 is interesting. It looks nothing like anyother computer, I like it, although it dosent fit my needs. The M1210 looks just plain sweet. I mean the black finish with silver trim an interior looks really good, I love mine.
-
The XPS series is definetly better and a step in the right direction but imo still pretty crappy. (m1210 and m2010 are the best design wise)
While there quality isn't the best its certainly good and for the money also. If you want the best however..give me a call -
To those who said that some of the dell models are "crappy," how are they different buildwise/stylewise against your own notebooks?
Remember, we are not talking specs here. Its looks/design that we are discussing. -
The XPS for sure. -

I personally like the look of the Formula Red XPS M1710 - the white keyboard, red lid all look great. Have to see the lid in person to really appreciate it.
-
I prefer the E series I think. the XPS is a little to "look at me".
Now, if we include JUST LOOKS, I do think HP notebooks look better overall. (My compaq quality was "ok" , but it ran extremely hot -- and the silly AC jack loosened from the mother board). -
This seems to be a hazard for nearly every notebook built except one...
I find Dell build quality "middle good" but value for the money, top of the line. I IMHO buy laptops for a three year lifespan before new software or operating systems turns them into a doorstop.
Several Dells offer, in certain configurations, incredible ease of upgradeability against many brands of laptops which can add two years to the above. -
I love the looks of the XPS line. The M1710 is a lot more of a gamers notebook with the LEDs and flashy colored lid, whereas the M2010 and M1210 are very classy IMO with the black and silver.
-
I voted the XPS line, but personally, I prefer the look of the Precision and Latitude lines. But the XPS' are far surperior to the Inspirons in many respects, including aesthetics and quality.
-
I agree with ftw right above. I voted for the xps line becasue the m2010 is just so interesting and the m1210 is just plain sexy. I hate how the m1710 looks, it appeals to gamers and such; i prefer to be a little more inconspicious. The Insperon E series are ugly IMO. The white bumpers don't do it for me. Personally if I had to choose, I would take a Latitude or Percision any day. The m65 is pretty much a Lattitude d820 and the m90 is pretty much the m1710 without the bright, attention-grabbing lid and lights. Latitude series, to me, seem sleek. XPS is definately better built than the Inspron series, but I think the Latitude and Percision are definatly better bult than the XPS line.
-
Too each there own.
I own a M1710, and i like the looks of it better than the E1705. Why?
The Metal Finish
Those "bumpers" now match the rest of the notebooks color. (I really dont like the white on the E series)
The gray keyboard
And of course, the lights.
Is it worth the extra money over a E1705? In my opinion, its not. But depending on what kind of deal you can get, it can be. I only paid $2400 mine, with the specs in my sig. -

I probably prefer the latitude the best, but the m1210 is right up there imho.
-
XPS i dont like the lights thing bc i leave on my laptop at night to convert video and such and its not worth it shining in my eyes and then why pay an extra grand for a better case when the E is good looking 2! and same cpu basically
-
I like how my E1505 looks, I wish the white trim on the side was black or dark grey, that would be perfect.
The XPS M1210 is ok, the 2010 i dont really like, the XPS M1710 is nice, but I think the lights make it more prone to theft than a regular laptop design -
Metamorphical Good computer user
I find the latitude line the be the most attractive. The 1210 is good looking as well and the 1710 is a great looking gaming notebook. I pick the XPS.
-
The M1210 is a very nice looking machine. Personally, I don't mind the lights on M1710 TOO much, but they are very conspicuous and I could see them being annoying. Plus they use more power, but by the time you're using a 17" and a 7900GTX, you probably don't care too much about power use. I also think that the Latitudes are the best looking of the Dell lineup, but their lack of decent GPU power kept me from buying. If the D820 only had an x1600 or a Go7600, I would have a D820 in my sig, not the M90 (though I'm glad I got the M90+17" over a smaller, less powerful machine). That's the kind of thing I was originally looking for. But Dell continues to be scattered with their graphics solutions, offering a 12" with an equivalent GPU as their flagship 15.4", putting terrible GPUs in their 14" machines, and top of the line GPUs in their 17" machines. Dell is very scattered with their choices.
-
The inspiron got the "cool" looks to me,about the white bumper some will hate it but a lot will like it ,I find it very unique though
cause you won't find any other laptop with that kind of design
If only Dell will put a 7600 in the E1505 ,it'll be the perfect "all purpose" machine for the price -
I'm with notebook_ftw. Latitudes are the best looking, then followed by the Precision (I got my M90 yesterday, btw). If they put a 7600 in their E1405 or E1505, no doubt they'd sell a LOT more of them.
-
all right then - the results are pretty much in - for 56 votes, a clean 1/3 prefer the E series, and the other 2/3 prefer the premium XPS line...
-
I like the white bumpers, too so my vote goes with the E series
-
I personally think that the Dell B series laptops look better than the E1705, E1505, E1405 series. I like the B series color. I don't like the white stripe of the E series. The XPS M1710 is rather extravagant in its design (too much "XPS" all over the laptop). The M1210 is okay.
Dell has skins for laptops bought this week. I hope they sell those skins separately soon. I like them. -
I like the look of the XPS. Not a fan of the Formula Red, so I got the Metallic Black instead, and, unbeknownst to me, the laptop arrived with a cover (bad picture of it in my avatar) that I think looks the best just on its own. It also has the option to put a picture or poster underneath it if you wish. So, the XPS line.
-
i prefer the acer ferrari series... oops i mean the mac books then... oops i mean the asus vx1... oops i mean alienware laptops... oops i mean voodoo laptops... oops i mean the sz series...
haha obviously i think they (xps m / inspiron E) can't be categorised as 'sexy' nor 'good looking'. imo they're on the same rank as thinkpads
but i got the m1210 cuz it's cheap and i'm a cheapo cheapo. and to steer people's gazes away from the actual look of the m1210 i just use sexy cars and women as my wallpaper
What is more aesthetically pleasing - the Dell XPS M or Inspiron E series?
