What is more important? Screen size or resolution? I know the 700m has a SXGA whereas the 600m has a XGA. I like the wide format but is 12 inches (No puns, please) too small to see well enough.

I do Powerpoint, Internet, Word and Adobe Photoshop simultaneously for work. I like to burn CDS but not necessary DVDs but would like that option. I looked at the Compaq V2000 which had a nice size but they increased their prices.

I am stuck amongst the 8600 (which has great battery life, esp with the additional modular battery and it is what ? 7 lbs?), the 600m (nice size and in between but no firewire port) and the 700m which is highly portable. I plan to carry this PC around to work and home daily. I am not an airline traveler it will be mainly local.

I cannot decide on the three and I am asking you Dell users which you felt was the right choice for you and why.

My usage is pretty like you, abode PS,AI, MS office. I brought the 8600 yesterday.
I vote for 8600 over 600m because 8600 has better video card. I would like to use it for games.
600M is a very good choice too, and dell have a pretty good deal NOW,

Don't ask me about the details on the deals, my friend gave it to me.

    Hope it helps!

i personally think the bigger screen the better, but you should have a res around 1024 768 or 1280 1024 or 1440 900 or whatever, not to large of numbers otherwise the writing will be TINY. For your use I'd go with the up and coming Dell Inspiron 6000, a lot like the 8600 except with the new stuff.

Personally, I think that the 1024 x 768 resolution is really kind of big even for web browsing. I think that an SXGA screen resolution is definitly the way to go. And, screen size is basically based on preference. Because, you can get a 12" screen with SXGA resolution or you can get a 15" with SXGA resolution, etc. It just depends on if you want to look at a small or large screen.

I couldn't stand it anymore. I am sending the HP Dv1000 back after seeing the WUXGA resolution from a colleague's 8600. I opted for the i6000. Thanks for the advice. I hope this solves the resolution issue. I noticed on the website from Dell the Dot pitch resolution was 0.18 or something for WUXGA and close to 0.28 or 0.29 for WXGA.

I opted for both. Definitly get a Widescreen laptop, so either the 8600 or 700. In my opinion the XGA icons are too large, and SXGA(+) is a better option. Do not let small icons disuade you from getting a High resolution. When I origionally got my laptop, I thought I was never going to get used to WUXGA, however now everything else seems gigantic. I always have my screen running at 1920x1200, and I can read everything fine.

    Inspiron 8600 * WUXGA * Intel Pentium M (Dothan) 725 (1.6 GHz) * 1024 MB of DDR333 * Mobility Radeon 9600 Pro Turbo with 128 MB @ 350/250 * 60 GB HD 5400RPM * CDRW/DVD Combo Drive

I opted for the i6000 for its weight over the 8600. I also liked its looks. The WUXGA is a fine choice as you have said. I am still waiting on my new machine to come in. I realize that it has integrated graphics but I don't play games or do 3 D applications. I do watch DVDs but the DV1000 was more than adequate for that (no dedicated card).
