What is safe to use to clean the clear plastic surface on the monitor. I have a bunch of finger prints on mine and don't want to use any thing that will scratch/harm it.

I always use a damp (water only) e-cloth or soft microfibre cloth. The same cloth you would use to clean a lcd/plasma tv.

It will get rid of blemishes caused by fingerprints.

Same deal with the microfiber cloth, but I typically use rubbing alcohol as opposed to water.

Screenwipes. Comes in a box like babywipes do. Tear and wipe and throw away. Has the right level of alcohol and other stuff in there. Costs £4 for about 100 wipes and they're pretty handy. Most coat the screen in an anti-agent which also retracts dust quite well

I use some wipes from walmart. They are back by the TV's and cost around $3 a box.
