I don't think I've read many complaints about 17" screens, except for a few about light leakage or dead pixels. And I don't think it's possible to see grain on a matte screen. The matte screen diffuses light and would probably even out any graininess that the screen might have.

Sorry I know I'm a little behind on this, but how would I go about replacing my screen to Dell? I have an AUO and the screen quality is pretty crappy. Do they charge you for replacements and are you gonna have to be without a laptop for a few days?

Hi! You actually don't have to pay for the replacement of the LCD since your Dell Notebook comes with the standard one year warranty. You just have to call Dell Technical Support (try this number 800-4563355 option (1) then ext 7238587 or 800-822-8965 option (1) & ext 7240444. It's up to your warranty if you need to send the system back to Dell or an onsite tech will come to your house to replace the LCD. ;)

pwnstar. my advice- RETURN IT NOW. right now get on the phone and return it. i have had mine replaced- got an awful screen and sent it back. i also sent it to the depot- same result.

mind you, the first csr guaranteed me the screen would be acceptable. didn't happen. the second guaranteed me that i would get a good screen, and even said they would replace it with an LG screen, seeing as how i had already had two bad SEC3350 screens.

save yourself some time and aggravation. imo- return it and get something else. there are some people that have had luck getting a decent screen replaced and i would bet most of them have the 3 year in-home warranty. if you don't have that, i'll bet you will get a month of run-around like i have. it's not worth the effort. i am waiting for a dell manager to call me back right now to return my 1520. said he would call back in 10 minutes. it's been an hour and a half.

i can't wait to get this thing out of my house!

Yeah, the grain on the LG is actually very little, but still noticable compared to my SEC. Putting both of them side-by-side, I found my SEC brighter than the LG, which is weird since the SEC seemed dim compared to the a very grainy AUO before. I may test that again just to be completely sure. I had high expectations for the LG screen, since it has the highest satisfaction rates, but I believe its rave reviews are isolated to the Vostro 1500/Inspiron 1520 models with the 15" screens.

In truth, for all the Dell screen issues, the LG is a very good screen, enough to make me seriously consider keeping it, but again a loose hinge is rather a big issue to me. However, I just wish I could move the crazy amazing viewing angles and the even backlighting traits of the LG to the SEC screen. If that were to happen, I'd be 100% satisfied.

I don't know about HP, but I have heard almost no issues on their screen. At this point, I believe getting a dv2500t might even be cheaper than a Vostro 1400 depending on the configuration. The Macbooks, for all their expense, seem to have display issues too, (I just recently saw a crazy grainy 22" Apple LCD) however I don't know if people just don't notice or care.

Are you talking about the 1200x800 displays? As far as I know those have the fewest issues, yet it's still possible for to get displays with bad light bleeding or graininess. I've heard the least compaints on the matte WXGA 14-inch screens.

I called Dell and they said they will be sending in a technician to replace my monitor. He said it would not be the same brand as the one I had before and said it should definately be better. I hope so! I did notice when I first got my laptop that the screen looked a little murky, but I thought I was just being picky. Then after reading this forum, I became much more picky :p

I hope my new screen looks much better! My current screen just looks like the colors are kinda muddled into each other... I guess you would call it the "oily" look... and the white seems kinda off. Like it has a layer of dust over it.

I have a dilema - the screen in M6300 is LG 1440x900 but the horizontal angles are crap. I can live with light bleed but when looking at the center of the screen - right side is a bit darker. I need to move my head right so it becomes clear... Will swapping the screen help?

my vostro 1400 is awesome except for the screen, it's grainy and the color is really off (blueish and harsh) vs my dell 20 inch WS for my desktop

I think i am going to call dell and get a replacement :/

I have the AUO2077 (1440 x 900) 15.4 inch screen on my Vostro 1500 and it has the exact same problem. Combined with the graininess, light leakage, and crappy vertical viewing angle, I'm having it replaced. My screen has just about everything that can be wrong with an LCD screen.

When I asked about having someone come out to replace the screen, the CSR said no, we'll build you a new one and send it to you. I even payed for the three year next day service too.

Honestly if the QC is so bad on these lcds they are better off just to get someone to replace the lcd instead of keep sending us laptops until one of them has a usable lcd.

Yeah, but they can turn around and sell the return as a refurbished unit without having to do a thing to it. I guess paying for shipping both ways, and the hit they take on the price reduction for the refurbished unit is cheaper than having a technician come and replace the screen.
