    Hi:

I have 5 usb ports on my dell studio 17 notebook, but one of them has a extrange connector, apparently is a self-powered usb port or something like that, but I can't connect a regular usb cable on it.
Can anybody tell me what kind of device could be connected to this port ? And What's the difference between this usb port vs regular usb ports ?

    Thanks

Sorry, you're right about the pic

Here's the pic, note the difference between the usb with the arrow and the "regular" usb ports

    I'm pretty sure it's esata.

I have a studio 15 with esata and the usb sign looks similar to the one i have but mines say esata aswell, also the connector looks similar.

Did you not get a manual? it should say in that.

That's a USB/eSATA combo port. USB will fit in that slot, but it will be tighter than most standard USB ports.

Thanks for answering, so you say I can connect any regular usb device also ? I try last week to connect a pendrive on it but it won't fit...
So this port is for connecting e-sata external drives ? What other devices could use this type of port ?

Yes, it should accommodate any standard USB devices as well as eSATA. It will be a tighter fit, if it's anything like the one on my Studio 15.

eSATA is mostly used for certain types of external hard drive enclosure. Off the top of my head, I can't really think of anything else that uses the eSATA interface.

From the photo looks like roroland's Studio 17 is the first version (1735), same as mine. So, it doesn't have e-SATA port. That port is only a USB port, but don't know why Dell makes it different.

This port can fit any standard USB cable/jack, but it has to be pushed a little bit.

I noticed mine is even powered when the laptop is turned off, works great for charging my cell phone.

I didn't know you could squeeze a USB connector on the esata port!! Does it share the same USB hub as the two USB ports nearby?
