Today out of the blue, my E1705 went into what I thought was Sleep Mode,
But I couldnt wake it up.

So I restarted, and there were vertical green lines at the boot screen, followed by a grey screen as it tried to boot.

Next I went into safe mode, and everything worked fine, and no video problems.

So I formatted (hoping it was windows), and even still at the boot up, I get those green lines.

So my suspicion is either the RAM or the Video card went out. RE-seating the RAM didnt help.

    What is the problem?

    Let me ask this,

Why then did everything look ok when in safe mode? Does that not use the Video Card?

Also, if it is my video card, where can I find a new 7900 for my dell?

I seemed to miss that part about safemode.

I do see that you said it did it while you formated the drive...maybe you just got lucky in safemode?

perhaps safe mode loads the Video drivers differently? try loading th newest drivers you can find in safe mode and booting into normal mode?

I'm simply guessing, i'm not sure what's going on. Are you still under warranty?

P.s. when you say "vertical green lines on the boot screen" do you mean the Windows boot screen or the bios boot screen? if windows, then i suggest the drivers. if bios, maybe try to flash the bios in safe mode?

When I turn it on, at the Dos like screen, it has the green vertical lines. The next screen is the windows screen where the Windows logo comes up, and also has the lines.

Then after 30 seconds my screen goes blank. but I can tell that its illuminated.

Everything sounds normal like the hard drive and dvd drive, just no video is coming up.

And I am out of warrantee wit this laptop :(

I have a Dell 9400 with the same graphics card as yourself and a couple of days ago got the same problem. I was able to go into safe mode cause safe mode used VGA graphics and formatted the computer but cant even go into safe mode now. Green lines still appear on start up. I am asking around to see what should be done but no one gives a straight answer.

Was the video card overclocked when it crashed?

And most importantly, is your computer still under warranty?
