You'll be getting an 8x CD/DVD burner (DVD+/-RW) with double-layer DVD+R write capability but i'm not sure what the manufacturer will be. Judging from the deals going on, I think you'll get the Sony DW-Q58A.

If that is the case, you can use:
    DVD-Video
    DVD-R
    DVD-RW
    DVD+R
    DVD+RW

The speed will be 8x. Here is the documentation for the sony drive: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/storage/p94658/en/index.htm

Right click "my computer" and and go to hardware manager. Look for the DVD drive listing ( next to the +)and click there. This will give your drive name and model number. I got an NEC.

I have been using the SAM'S verbatims with no problems. You can use any media 2X or higher but different brands may be problematic depending on what your drive likes. As Southerngal wrote, your burner max write speed is 8X DEPENDING on your media specs. My old pioneer drive threw hissy fits with some brands of DVD media but i haven't tried but two brands with the NEC, verbatim and cheap Imation, no problems yet. DL media is WAY to expensive and I think it will die as HD disk come mainstream.
